Hyundai Mobis, the auto parts manufacturing arm of South Korea's Hyundai Group, has begun construction of an electric vehicle (EV) battery system factory in Indonesia, in its latest effort to expand into Southeast Asia's booming EV market.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by local government and company leaders, including West Java Governor Mochamad Ridwan Kamil and Hyundai Mobis Senior Vice President of Electrification Oh Heung-sub.
Hyundai Mobis' new factory in Indonesia is located at the Kota Deltamas industrial complex in West Java province, about 60 km from the capital Jakarta. The factory is expected to be completed in the first half of next year.
The plant will supply battery cells to a local joint venture called HLI Green Power, along with complete battery systems in module form for a newly established Hyundai Motor plant.
Hyundai Motor Group also plans to build its own production line within the premises of Hyundai Mobis' factory, with a total investment of 60 million USD.
After expanding production in North America and Europe, Hyundai Mobis recently said it aims to complete the global electrification value chain through a new manufacturing facility in Southeast Asia.
