Instagram 'preempts' TikTok ban to launch Edits app
The app, which is expected to launch in mid-March, promises to provide users with powerful and easy-to-use video creation tools similar to what CapCut has done. Edits is expected to fill the void if CapCut is removed due to the TikTok ban.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri said Edits is more than just a video editing app, it's "a full suite of creative tools." The app will offer features like:
- Shoot high quality video, edit frame by frame.
- Add effects, filters, stickers, music...
- Improve sound, eliminate noise.
- Automatically generate subtitles.
- Share drafts with friends, collaborators.
- Track video performance on Instagram.
Notably, Edits allows users to export videos without watermarks and share them on any platform, a plus compared to many other video editing apps.
Instagram's launch of Edits right now is considered a smart 'copycat' strategy, taking advantage of users' concerns about losing CapCut. This is not the first time Meta has copied ideas from competitors. Previously, they have 'borrowed' many features from Snapchat, TikTok and Twitter to integrate into their products.
However, Meta insists that Edits is designed for serious content creators, with the goal of providing a professional video editing experience on mobile. They are also actively gathering feedback from experts to improve the app.
