The International Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have officially opened applications for the 2025 Compute for Climate Fellowship.
This fully funded program supports startups’ research and development (R&D) projects that leverage advanced cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) to develop new solutions to combat climate change. This year, the program expanded to include 20 global startups selected to develop their proof of concepts (PoCs) for free.
“With the impacts of the climate crisis growing, it’s urgent to support diverse approaches to bringing new climate solutions to life, which is why we’re expanding the program to include more startups,” said Lisbeth Kaufman, Director of Climate Technology Startup Business Development at AWS.
From fusion energy to smarter power grids, from generative AI models discovering climate-resilient plants to deep-sea drones mapping the oceans, we've seen how advanced cloud computing and AI unlock new possibilities for a more sustainable future."
Applications for the 2025 Compute for Climate Fellowship are now open through April 6. Climate technology startups, entrepreneurs, and researchers from around the world are encouraged to submit proposals that use advanced computing technology to address climate change mitigation and adaptation challenges.
Startups selected to participate in the Compute for Climate Fellowship program will receive funding, technical support, in-depth mentorship, and access to AWS technology and IRCAI research capabilities to develop a PoC for their project.
This year, AWS is committing up to $4 million in AWS credits to support the development of selected PoCs through the program. The selection process will prioritize projects that can be completed in 2-3 months, have a groundbreaking vision, the potential for significant environmental impact, are highly scalable, and are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Startups that apply but are not selected for the program will have access to up to $5,000 in AWS credits through the AWS Activate program, as well as free workshops and training on how to use AWS advanced computing services to build their solutions.
