China Three female martial artists Nguyen Thi Phuong, Luu Thi Thu Uyen and Nguyen Ngoc Tram won the women's team kata event on the afternoon of October 6.

Defeating Malaysia with a score of 42.70 - 39 in the final, the karate athletes brought home a precious gold medal. This is Vietnam's third gold medal at the 19th Asian Games and the second team gold medal after the victory of the sepak takraw team in the women's four-person event. On September 28, shooter Pham Quang Huy won the first gold medal in shooting, the men's individual 10m air pistol event.

This achievement helped Vietnam rise to 19th place in the overall rankings with three gold, four silver and 17 bronze medals. In Southeast Asia alone, this gold medal helped Vietnam catch up with Singapore and the Philippines, but still trail Malaysia by two, Indonesia by four and Thailand by seven gold medals.

"Before the competition, I felt unwell and very worried. But now, both myself and my teammates are very happy. This gold medal has great significance. We fight for the country, for our families, teammates and coaches. We compete for everyone. I am very happy that karate brought home a gold medal for Vietnam at this congress," said martial artist Nguyen Ngoc Tram after the final round.

In the final this afternoon, female martial artists Nguyen Thi Phuong, Ngoc Tram and Thu Uyen chose to perform the Ohan Dai form. Each member of the team performed each move decisively, strongly and precisely, thereby convincing the seven judges to give them a much higher score than Chinto's form of the Malaysian martial artists.

The 19th Asian Games is the first time karate has included kata in the medal competition. The women's event this time has four participating countries, all from Southeast Asia: Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and Brunei. In the first round, which took place right before the final, Vietnam beat Cambodia with a score of 40.80 - 38.90, while Malaysia beat Brunei with a score of 38.80 - 38.20.

On the afternoon of October 6, Vietnamese karate still hoped to win another gold medal when Nguyen Thi Ngoan entered the final of the women's 61kg kumite. The former world champion consecutively defeated her opponents Jesus Marta Do Carmo (Macau, China), Golshadezhad Atousa (Iran) and Kanay Assel (Kazakhstan). However, in the final, Nguyen Thi Ngoan lost to the host Chinese opponent Gong Li with a score of 0-9.

Karate will compete for two more days, until October 8. Vietnam will have Do Thanh Nhan competing in the men's kumite 84kg and Hoang Thi My Tam competing in the women's kumite 55kg tomorrow afternoon.
