On the first day of competition (June 18) at the 2025 Southeast Asian Karate Championship held in Brunei, the Vietnamese team made a strong impression by winning 11 gold medals.
This year's tournament took place from June 17 to June 19, bringing together 424 athletes from 9 countries in the Southeast Asian region, competing in kata (performance) and kumite (combat) events, divided into three age groups: youth, youth and championship.
The young martial artists of the Vietnamese karate team competed excellently and brought home a series of gold medals in many events.
Accordingly, in the junior age group, Vietnamese martial artists won 3 gold medals thanks to the following martial artists: Nguyen Thi Ha Giang (61kg female), Ho Loc (63kg male), Nguyen Sinh Khanh (over 70kg male). In the Kata category, the gold medal belonged to martial artists Bui Chi Cong (junior male individual kata) and the gold medal in the young female team kata.
In the U21 age group, Vietnamese karate continued to demonstrate its depth with gold medals in the following weight categories: Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly (5kg women), Nguyen Thi Man (61kg women), Do Duy Khanh (55kg men), Chu Van Duc (60kg men), Dinh Hoang Tan (67kg men) and Nguyen Truong Son (84kg men) all won in their respective weight categories, contributing to raising the total number of gold medals on the first day to 11.
Notably, the Vietnamese team still has many expected faces competing in championship events, especially in confrontation events with the participation of key players.
A representative of the Vietnamese karate team's coaching board said that in addition to the goal of achieving high results, this tournament is a valuable opportunity for athletes to gain experience in international competitions, while also studying and evaluating opponents in the region. The lessons and experiences in Brunei will be an important premise for Vietnamese karate's preparation journey towards the 33rd SEA Games, which will take place in 2025 in Thailand.
