Combining modern medicine and traditional medicine in disease treatment

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Thanh Hoa is a province with many rare medicinal herbs, rich and diverse marine biological resources, and an extremely valuable source of marine medicinal herbs. Promoting its advantages, the combination of modern medicine (MM) and traditional medicine (TM) in disease treatment is increasingly widely applied in the medical examination and treatment system (KCB), meeting the increasing needs of the people.

At medical stations, there are model medicinal herb gardens to preserve medicinal plant varieties and guide people in using medicinal herbs to prevent and treat diseases.

Currently, the traditional medicine medical examination and treatment system in the province has developed in both quality and scale, with 8 provincial hospitals, 25 old district hospitals, 547 commune and ward health stations; the private sector has 1 hospital, 548 traditional medicine medical examination and treatment facilities, 4,195 traditional medicine finished medicine business establishments, contributing to improving the capacity of traditional medicine medical examination and treatment in the province. Thanh Hoa Traditional Medicine Association has been focused on strengthening and developing, the association's organizational system has been expanded to the commune level, with a total of 2,885 members; many localities have traditional medicine associations, traditional medicine clinics - places for practicing medical examination and treatment, and at the same time, places for applying, inheriting and developing traditional medicine fields. Every year, the health sector has coordinated with functional units to organize inspections and checks to ensure that medical examination and treatment activities using oriental medicine and the production and trading of oriental medicine in the province comply with the provisions of law.

As the highest level in the field of traditional medicine (TM) in the province, with the functions and tasks of multidisciplinary medical examination and treatment using TM, applying and inheriting good remedies, precious medicines, combining TM with modern medicine in treating patients, directing lower levels on TM, training and fostering TM for grassroots health care, gradually socializing TM in primary health care in the community, Thanh Hoa Provincial TM Hospital has been gradually modernizing on the basis of maintaining the identity of TM, combining the quintessence of the two foundations of TM and modern medicine. The hospital has been recognized as qualified to process and prepare traditional medicines according to Circular No. 32/2020/TT-BYT, stipulating the standards for processing and preparing traditional medicines in TM medical examination and treatment facilities. Currently, the hospital has a closed drug preparation line with a drug washing machine, a drug drying room, a drug copying system as well as a modern automatic decoction system to ensure hygiene; there are 5 approved internal circulation traditional medicine products (Bat Tran liquid extract, Duong Tam An Than liquid extract, Neurutis liquid extract, Tang Ky Sinh Duhuo pills, Quy Ti black pills), which have brought high efficiency and convenience to the examination and treatment process of patients.

Doctor Nguyen Van Tam, Director of Thanh Hoa Provincial Traditional Medicine Hospital, shared: Determining professional and technical development with the orientation of combining traditional medicine and modern medicine as the "backbone" for the development of the unit, the hospital has applied and deployed a variety of techniques in treatment, combining traditional medicine with modern medicine to effectively treat many difficult and chronic diseases such as extracorporeal lithotripsy; the method of suturing and severing blood vessels in hemorrhoidectomy, anal fistula, anorectal diseases; rehabilitation procedures... In addition to using oriental medicine and traditional medicine preparations, the hospital also deploys non-drug methods such as acupuncture, acupressure massage, health care and the use of equipment in physical therapy and rehabilitation, striving to excellently complete the set targets, constantly improving the quality of services towards providing safe and effective medical services, bringing the highest satisfaction to patients.

Together with Thanh Hoa Provincial Traditional Medicine Hospital, traditional medicine departments of grassroots hospitals are arranged to increase hospital beds, and medical stations have model medicinal herb gardens to preserve medicinal plant varieties, while instructing people on how to use medicinal herbs in disease prevention and treatment...

Identifying that human resources play a decisive role in improving the quality of traditional medicine care, the Department of Health continues to develop a training plan, improving the quality of training human resources specializing in traditional medicine to meet the requirements of traditional medicine development and combining traditional medicine with modern medicine (YDHĐ). In the period of 2019-2024, the traditional medicine human resources in the province have been improved in both quality and quantity, with 1 doctor of traditional medicine, 11 doctors of traditional medicine level II, 25 masters/specialists of traditional medicine level I; 11 doctors of traditional medicine; 5 doctors of traditional medicine level II are being trained, 21 masters/specialists of traditional medicine level I.

Dr. Le Van Cuong, Director of Thanh Hoa Department of Health, said that the outstanding advantage of Traditional Medicine is its creative and flexible application in diagnosis and treatment. Currently, in the trend of combining Traditional Medicine - Modern Medicine, doctors can combine the use of drugs and non-drug measures to improve the effectiveness of palliative care, health recovery as well as the treatment of diseases. In the coming time, the health sector will continue to implement the goals in Decision No. 1893/QD-TTg on the development of Traditional Medicine, combining Traditional Medicine with Modern Medicine by 2030. Comprehensively develop Traditional Medicine, strengthen the combination of Traditional Medicine with Modern Medicine to protect, care for, and improve people's health in the new situation, strive to comprehensively develop Traditional Medicine by 2030, strengthen the capacity of medical examination and treatment in terms of human resources, facilities, and equipment in Traditional Medicine medical examination and treatment facilities. By 2030, 95% of general hospitals and hospitals with beds, specialized hospitals with traditional medicine departments; 100% of commune and ward health stations and equivalents will implement activities to consult on the use of traditional medicine in health care or organize traditional medicine examination and treatment; increase the rate of traditional medicine examination and treatment, combine traditional medicine examination and treatment with modern medicine at all levels...
