Verification results of information about crocodiles appearing in Can Tho

Regarding people's reflection on the discovery of a crocodile in Nhon My commune, the authorities checked but did not detect it.

Regarding the information reflected by the people about a crocodile about 1.5m long and weighing about 30-40kg floating on the water surface at Phung Tuong 2 hamlet, Nhon My commune ( Can Tho city), the Department of Rural Development and the City Forestry Department went to the scene to coordinate with the local authorities, police force, militia and people to conduct inspection and verification.

Accordingly, the authorities checked the scene and the surrounding area where the crocodile was believed to have appeared, but did not find any. As of November 8, local authorities and surrounding residents also said they had not seen this animal appear.

The Department of Rural Development and Forestry of Can Tho City said that it will continue to coordinate with local authorities to monitor and update the situation. At the same time, the professional sector also recommends that people living around the above area should be vigilant, take precautions, and not let children swim in rivers, canals, and ditches. People are also advised that when they discover a crocodile, they should immediately report it to local authorities for timely handling measures.

It is known that in Can Tho City, there are 10 establishments registered to breed freshwater crocodiles with a total of 4,769 individuals, located in Thanh Tri, Gia Hoa, Hoa Tu communes and Khanh Hoa, Vinh Phuoc, Soc Trang wards. Through monitoring data of households registered to breed in the vicinity of Phung Tuong 2 hamlet (Nhon My commune), the Department of Rural Development and Forestry of Can Tho City confirmed that there is no establishment registered to breed crocodiles.

The Department has also inspected the situation and reminded households that have registered to raise ferocious wild animals to regularly check and reinforce their cages to ensure safety, and not let the animals escape during the rainy season when the river water rises. In case the household discovers that the animals have escaped, measures must be taken to capture them so as not to affect the people and cause public panic.
