The Thu Thiem – Long Thanh railway project starts from Thu Thiem station (Thu Duc city, Ho Chi Minh city) to Long Thanh airport (Long Thanh district, Dong Nai province). The total length of the route is about 48.2km, of which the main route is 41.8km (the section passing through Ho Chi Minh city is 11.7km; through Dong Nai is 30.8km) and the road leading to Cam Duong Depot (technical station) is 4.4km.
This is an urban railway line invested by the Ministry of Construction; the locality is responsible for organizing investment, construction, management and exploitation. The line is designed as a double track, 1,435mm gauge, train speed of 120km/h with 20 stations; transporting passengers in and out of the city from Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai province to Long Thanh Airport with a transport capacity of 30,000 - 40,000 people/direction/hour.

According to the Ministry of Construction, the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh urban railway is one of the urgent projects that need to apply superior mechanisms to implement on schedule and invest effectively. Therefore, since mid-March 2025, the Ministry of Construction has proposed to the Government to include this railway in the Ho Chi Minh City urban railway planning; pilot a number of specific mechanisms and policies for construction and assign the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee as the competent state agency for the project.
In early April 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha directed the People's Committees of Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province to report to the local People's Councils on assigning the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City as the competent authority to implement the project in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Public Investment as proposed by the Ministry of Construction.
At the end of April 2025, Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc informed that the city had sent a document proposing the Ministry of Construction to report to the Government and the Prime Minister to approve the investment of this project using the central budget with a total capital of about 3.4 billion USD (more than 84,000 billion VND); put the project in the priority investment list according to the specific and special mechanisms and policies approved by the National Assembly in Resolution 188 (February 2025).

According to Chairman of Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee Vo Tan Duc, on April 29, at the 27th session of Dong Nai Provincial People's Council, term X, delegates passed Resolution No. 28/NQ-HDND on agreeing on the policy of assigning Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee as the competent authority to implement the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway construction investment project.

According to the Pre-Feasibility Study Report of the Project proposed by the TEDI – TEDIS consortium (Ministry of Construction), the Thu Thiem – Long Thanh railway project will be a mass rapid transit (MRT) urban railway; the maximum design speed is up to 120 km/h. The total land area cleared for the project is more than 140 hectares; the number of affected households is 302.

The Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway project is expected to be constructed from the fourth quarter of 2026 to 2029; equipment and train procurement will be organized from 2028-2029; completion, trial operation and commercial exploitation will be carried out in 2030.
Dr. Vo Kim Cuong, former Deputy Chief Architect of Ho Chi Minh City, commented: Long Thanh Airport is expected to officially operate in 2026. Therefore, traffic connection projects to the airport must also be urgently constructed, including the Thu Thiem – Long Thanh urban railway. The connecting routes will help minimize the risk of traffic overload to and from Long Thanh Airport, maximizing the airport's capacity.
“Moreover, the Thu Thiem – Long Thanh railway also makes an important contribution to regional development connectivity, not only for connecting with Long Thanh airport but also for the entire Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area in the Southeast region,” said Dr. Vo Kim Cuong.

According to Tran Quang Lam, Acting Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, over the past years, the city has coordinated with central ministries and branches to demarcate and protect the land area planned for the Thu Thiem terminal station, covering an area of 17 hectares in Thu Duc city.
This is the final passenger station of the North-South high-speed railway and also the station of the Long Thanh - Thu Thiem railway; connecting with the inner-city metro lines of Ho Chi Minh City. According to the Department of Construction, the corridor of the high-speed railway runs along the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh highway, so it does not affect much in terms of site clearance. The city is looking forward to this project being implemented soon.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Master Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 and the adjusted master plan for Ho Chi Minh City to 2040, with a vision to 2060, there are 4 railway lines serving the connection between Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport. These are metro lines 2, 4, 6 and the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh national railway line. Currently, Ho Chi Minh City is studying and prioritizing investment in 3 metro lines according to specific and special mechanisms and policies approved by the National Assembly in Resolution No. 188/2025/QH15 dated February 19, 2025.
