Affirming the "capital" of brackish water shrimp

With its strengths in research and production of aquatic breeds, Khanh Hoa has become the "capital", supplying 25 - 30% of the demand for brackish water shrimp breeds for coastal localities across the country, from Quang Ninh to Ca Mau.

Advantages and opportunities

After more than 30 years of development, Khanh Hoa has become the "capital" of producing varieties of seeds for aquaculture in the whole country. Particularly for brackish water shrimp seed production (including black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp), up to now, the whole province has nearly 500 production facilities, meeting the needs of farmers in coastal localities across the country with an output of about 45 billion seeds/year.

Currently, shrimp seed production facilities in the province are concentrated in aquatic seed production areas: Nhon Hai (Vinh Hai commune), An Hai and the parent shrimp seed production area Son Hai (Phuoc Dinh commune). In addition, the Ninh Van concentrated shrimp seed production and inspection area (Dong Ninh Hoa ward) has completed its infrastructure and is calling for investment in production. Among the units investing in brackish water shrimp seed production in Khanh Hoa, there are many leading corporations and enterprises such as: Minh Phu Aquatic Seed Company Limited, CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company, Nam Mien Trung Company, Viet Uc Company Limited, Moana Company... These are reputable brackish water shrimp seed production units, ensuring production standards and trusted by farmers.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trong Chanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, since the beginning of the year, despite facing many difficulties due to unstable consumption markets and increased input product prices, the brackish water shrimp seed output of facilities in the province produced and supplied to the market has still increased. Specifically, in the first 9 months of 2025, the whole province produced 41.4 billion brackish water shrimp seeds (including 7.2 billion black tiger shrimp and 34.2 billion white-leg shrimp), an increase of 11.1% over the same period in 2024. The province's role in shrimp seed production in the whole country is very important, clearly demonstrated by supplying 25 - 30% of shrimp seed output to the whole country.

Development orientation

However, the province's position as the "capital" of shrimp seed is facing many challenges, because concentrated production areas are facing risks in terms of environment, disease safety, and unsynchronized infrastructure, reducing production efficiency and making it difficult to manage disease safety. Investment costs in seed production, especially input costs, such as: parent shrimp sources depending on imports, high feed prices... greatly affect the operations of production facilities. In addition, many facilities are small-scale and lack linkages, causing difficulties in management and tracing the origin of shrimp seed... "Currently, the source of parent shrimp is a challenge for shrimp seed production facilities. Therefore, Vietnam needs to take the initiative in the source of parent shrimp, avoiding dependence on foreign countries. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment advises the Government to have a plan to supply parent shrimp sources to localities producing shrimp seed in the coming time," Mr. Le Van Que - Chairman of the Ninh Thuan - Khanh Hoa Aquatic Seed Association proposed.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment PHUNG DUC TIEN: With the advantage of having the longest coastline in the country of up to 490km, more than 200 islands, many lagoons and bays, Khanh Hoa has outstanding advantages to develop the marine economy. Khanh Hoa is identified as the center of fisheries, the locality leading the aquaculture industry in the country. To promote the strength of shrimp seed production, improve the quality of brackish water shrimp seeds, the province needs to focus on investing in scientific and technological research to create high-quality brackish water shrimp seeds, especially selecting and creating parent shrimp stocks. In addition, it is necessary to effectively manage shrimp seed production and breeding facilities; inspect and strictly handle cases that do not meet the conditions but still produce and breed unsafe, disease-free shrimp seeds, and still sell them to farmers. In addition, it is necessary to closely follow the planning to organize effective and sustainable production; invest in infrastructure for brackish water shrimp seed production for commercial farming; Maximize digital transformation application in management, production organization, ensuring traceability of shrimp seeds...

Speaking at the conference on brackish water shrimp seed development organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in coordination with the Provincial People's Committee in Khanh Hoa recently, Mr. Trinh Minh Hoang - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee said: "To maintain the role of the national shrimp seed "capital", in the coming time, the province will promote investment in construction and completion of infrastructure of concentrated aquatic seed production areas; create a transparent and effective investment and business environment to attract high-tech enterprises to invest in the aquaculture sector in general, seed production in particular; strengthen the effectiveness of seed quality management and disease surveillance, ensuring the brand, reputation and superior quality of Khanh Hoa shrimp seed".
