Khanh Hoa: Dinh River overcomes historic flood of 1986, people cannot react in time and call for urgent help

On the night of November 19, water from the upper reaches of the Cai River in Nha Trang ( Khanh Hoa ) poured in, combined with heavy rain in the area, causing the water level to rise rapidly in many low-lying areas along the river in Tay Nha Trang ward (formerly Vinh Trung, Vinh Thanh, Vinh Hiep, Vinh Phuong communes) and Ninh Hoa area.

At 1:00 a.m. on November 20, Ms. Nguyen Thi H. ( West Nha Trang ward , old Vinh Trung commune) sent a text message asking for help when the flood water rose, and the whole family of 5 had to move to the attic.

"The water rose so fast that we didn't have time to react. All our belongings were swept away. Now the whole family is in the attic. The water is up to our necks, almost reaching our sleeping quarters upstairs," said Minh Tuan, a resident of Vo Cang village.

Ms. Phuong Linh (Dien Khanh commune) said that the house was full of elderly people and children, and there was no way to contact rescue . The water had flooded over the door of the house, so her husband had to remove the roof tiles to consider the possibility of the whole family climbing up.

Meanwhile, many households in the old Vinh Thanh commune said they had never seen such high water levels before. Many households were complacent because they had never experienced flooding before, but now their houses were submerged nearly a meter in floodwater. Ms. Kim Anh (Western Nha Trang Ward) said her whole family had to "leave their belongings and run for their lives" to the upper floors because the floodwaters suddenly attacked at night, something that had never happened before.

Many people were surprised because the water rose so quickly, exceeding the highest flood level ever, so they had no time to react.

Floods on the Kon River peaked overnight, many places remain above alert level 3.

On social media groups, hundreds of messages asking for help continuously appeared with the following content: "My house in Vinh Phuong commune is flooded over my head, can anyone help?", "Vinh Thanh area is completely isolated, out of food and water", "There are elderly people and children in the house, please help save them".

During the night, receiving hundreds of emergency calls, Khanh Hoa authorities mobilized thousands of police officers, soldiers, militiamen, and specialized canoes and boats to deep flooded areas for rescue.

Many Khanh Hoa residents went online to ask for help at night because they could not contact rescue teams.

Notably, in Ninh Hoa, the Dinh River water level exceeded the historic flood level of 1986, causing thousands of households to be submerged in water.

Khanh Hoa authorities said that by the early morning of November 20, hundreds of elderly people, children, and pregnant women had been taken to safe shelters. Khanh Hoa authorities are continuing to closely monitor weather developments and are ready to respond as heavy rain is forecast to continue in the coming days.
