Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang and An Huu - Cao Lanh are two horizontal expressways of the Mekong Delta. When completed, these routes will connect the vertical routes, reducing pressure on National Highway 1, N1, especially the overloaded National Highway 91... The project also contributes to completing the regional transport network, connecting the economy and society of the Western provinces with Cambodia and Southeast Asian countries.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the efforts of the four localities through which the expressway passes, as well as the Ministry of Transport and related units for completing the huge amount of work of several years in just one year.

The Government leader also welcomed the people who gave up their homes and livelihoods to make way for the project to be implemented. He also requested that provinces and cities, when clearing land and resettling, must support people to stabilize production and create sustainable livelihoods.

According to the Ministry of Transport, by 2050 the Mekong Delta will have 6 expressways with a total length of about 1,188 km and a scale of 4-6 lanes. These projects are evenly distributed throughout the region with three vertical and three horizontal axes.

To date, the West has 90 km of expressway in operation and under construction. By 2025, there will be an additional 458 km, including the completion of the Eastern North-South expressway from Ho Chi Minh City to Ca Mau, some sections of the Western North-South expressway, and the basic completion of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, which started construction today.

Also this morning, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province organized the groundbreaking ceremony for the project to upgrade the coastal road DT 994 , nearly 77 km long. The total investment is over 7,000 billion VND. The route passing through urban and tourist areas connecting Binh Thuan province will be expanded to 6-8 lanes, with a design speed of 80 km/h outside urban and residential areas.

The Cua Lap 2 and Song Ray bridges and some small off-road bridges will be built along the route. The project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2025.

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, Nguyen Cong Vinh, said that upgrading and expanding the coastal road is extremely urgent in the context of increasing traffic volume. The route passes through 5 localities of the province, along with projects invested in the coming time such as: Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway, Phuoc An bridge, the connecting road from the expressway to Vung Tau city... will create a smooth, modern traffic network, connecting the province to the key economic region of the South.
