Brighton couple Adele and Matt Allen, 39, are raising their three children with “child autonomy”. They allow their children to set their own curriculum, bedtimes, menus, mealtimes and chore lists.

The Allen children did not go to school, were self-taught, and were not vaccinated.

The Allens don't trust the health care oreducation systems, so they allow their children — Ulysses, 12, Ostara, 8, and Kai, 4 — to make their own choices from a very young age.

"We don't vaccinate our children, which people say is cruel to children. We also don't use the healthcare system, but instead use natural and herbal remedies," said the mother of three.

All three of Adele's children were breastfed until the age of 3.

"We also don't use the education system, we don't send our children to school. This means the children have to show interest in something so we can explore it together, rather than following a curriculum and telling them what they will learn," Adele said.

Adele Allen and her husband believe in children's autonomy and allow them to shape their own lives, make their own choices and decide what happens instead of dictating to them. However, Adele also explains that "this does not mean that parents do not guide their children.

The Allens believe in letting children find what makes them happy and follow their lead. Adele sees her three children finding their interests and learning through family activities.

Daughter Ostara loves sewing and is honing that skill, while eldest son Ulysses is exploring his passion for animals and computers.

The second daughter has a hobby of sewing.

“We just follow their lead. If they want to start a club or a band in a short period of time, we will help them do it,” Adele said.

"My son started showing an interest in reading and writing when he was 10. He picked up pen and paper and taught himself without us having to teach him for a minute. Language is all around them, so my children are bound to absorb it. When they are not in a classroom environment, there is no pressure to do certain things at a certain age," the mother said.

After sharing their lifestyle and child-rearing methods on social media, despite opposition, the British couple built a community of people with similar thoughts and interests.

Critics say the Allens' way of living and raising their children is "lazy" and "cruel." However, the couple says the way they are doing with their children is the opposite of what critics think.

The family doesn't like alarm clocks so they wake up naturally, cook whenever the kids are hungry and actively encourage them to participate in household chores, but don't demand them. " We don't have any boundaries with anything. However, we do have agreements to respect each other, like not being too loud when someone is sleeping," Adele shared.

The mother of three hopes that her children will find their passion and not waste time in life, to know who they are until they grow up.
