The New York Times quoted officials from both Ukraine and Russia confirming the car bombing that killed and injured three people on the evening of June 2 (local time).

The car bomb attack occurred in the town of Mykhailivka in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia province, which was unilaterally annexed by Russia in October last year.

The car bomb attack killed a “local businessman” named Sergei Didovoduk and injured two others, according to Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-appointed official in Zaporizhzhia.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ivan Fedorov, a Ukrainian official, also said that the targeted car "carried four Kremlin supporters." Mr. Ivan Fedorov is the mayor of Melitopol, about 40 km south of Mykhailivka, but had to flee the city when the Zaporizhzhia region was controlled by Russia. Ukraine said the group carrying out the attack were civilians.

The car bombing in an area far from the front line comes as Ukraine is believed to be preparing a major counter-offensive to retake territories annexed by Russia, including the Crimean peninsula, since 2014.

The major counterattack plan was confirmed by The Wall Street Journal citing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on June 3.

"We are ready for a major counteroffensive to regain the territories occupied by Russia," Volodymyr Zelensky said, stressing that "we strongly believe that we will succeed, although we do not know how long it will take."

The Ukrainian leader also said that the counter-offensive plan to regain the territory could be "in many different ways".

The US and other Western allies have recently provided many resources, from money and weapons to training soldiers, to help Ukraine prepare for a counterattack plan.

British military experts have put thousands of Ukrainian recruits through a grueling 35-day training program. The program, funded by nine countries, aims to train 20,000 soldiers for deployment by the end of the year.

Ukraine's president stressed that Russia has air superiority and called on the US and its allies to provide them with F-16 fighter jets to "change the game".
