Uncle Hoa and overseas Vietnamese pay tribute to ancestors, local gods, and the Kitchen Gods. |
In the newly built spacious house on a campus of more than 2,000 square meters, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa shared that this is the first year his family has set up an altar in the new house, so he is very excited because life is now stable and the family's economy is improving.
Born and raised in Thailand, Mr. Hoa said that he used to live in Northeast Thailand, but wherever he is, he always tries to preserve the good customs of the Vietnamese people. To prepare for the ceremony to worship Ong Cong and Ong Tao this year, his family has been busy for the past few days, from buying offerings to preparing food for the tray to be more full, with the right traditional flavor.
On the altar, we also saw a small bowl of water with 3 goldfish in it. Uncle Hoa happily said that he had traveled dozens of kilometers to Chatuchak pet market to buy them to release on this occasion.
Besides the tray of food with banh chung, boiled chicken, fried spring rolls, sticky rice, various salads and some Thai food, Mr. Hoa said that although he was born in Le Son village, Van Hoa commune, Tuyen Hoa district, Quang Binh province, he still remembered the food there, so he tried to make and cook some dishes like those in his hometown, such as banh chung and sticky rice. Although both of them have opened a restaurant in Thailand for decades, they still personally prepare the dishes for the tray of offerings to Ong Cong and Ong Tao.

After the ceremony, Mr. Hoa and some overseas Vietnamese in Thailand went to the temple to release fish. Slowly releasing each fish into the cool river, Mr. Hoa prayed for his family to be happier, for his business to prosper, for our overseas Vietnamese to be more united, and for them to wholeheartedly turn towards their homeland and country.
Gathering around the dinner table after releasing fish to send the Kitchen Gods to heaven, the overseas Vietnamese uncles, aunts and uncles had the opportunity to visit and encourage each other to overcome difficulties in life. Attending together, we felt warm, because we always saw bright smiles and faith towards the homeland of the overseas Vietnamese community in Thailand.
