Under the clear blue water of the Blue Ocean swimming pool, Hoang Quoc Huy, a student at the Provincial Social Protection Center, stands out with his strong and decisive strokes. But few people know that this boy used to have a fear of water that made him tremble, every time he stepped into the pool it was a "battle" with himself. But overcoming everything, with his strong will and the spirit of not giving up in the face of difficulties, Huy gradually conquered this sport , from the initial awkward movements to mastering the techniques, becoming the best student in the class. Not only is he a good swimmer, he is also a positive inspiration for his friends to progress together. Sharing about his journey, Huy confided: When I first started learning, I was very scared, but thanks to Mr. Thong and my seniors always being there to encourage me, I was determined not to give up. Every day I told myself to try harder than yesterday and I overcame myself.
Behind the success of the children is always the dedication and perseverance of teacher Chu Huy Thong - the silent "fire-bearer" of this special swimming class. With many years of experience teaching and coaching swimming, he teaches the children every technical movement from basic to advanced. Not only teaching them how to float, how to breathe or how to kick water, more importantly, he teaches them how to believe in themselves, how to overcome their own fears and limits. Along with teaching swimming skills, the teacher guides them through hypothetical situations, interactive games and group activities to prevent drowning accidents. From there, the children not only master the knowledge but also know how to handle it flexibly when encountering dangerous situations in reality. Teacher Thong shared: Each child coming to the class brings with them a personal story, a personal obstacle. For Huy, it is a fear of water. But I always believe that as long as the children have faith and are properly accompanied, nothing is impossible to overcome.
Lessons with Mr. Thong are always filled with laughter, encouragement and applause every time a child completes a new movement, which is the motivation for them to be confident in themselves. Thanks to him, the project "Kình nhi tren nui" is not only a skill class but also a journey to change the lives of the children.
Cao Bang is a mountainous province with many rivers, streams, ponds and lakes, which pose a potential risk of drowning accidents, especially for children. According to data from the Provincial Youth Union, each year the province has about 5-10 tragic drowning accidents, leaving sorrow for families and the community. However, teaching children to swim faces many difficulties due to lack of facilities and specialized teachers, many children do not have the conditions to study at the centers. Based on that reality, the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee - Provincial Youth Union Council implemented the project "Kình nhi tren nui" as a "lifebuoy" with deep humanistic values. In the first year of implementation, after 2 months, the project opened 4 classes with more than 60 students, of which 50% of students are being cared for at the Provincial Social Protection Center. In addition, this summer, the province organized 12 free swimming classes for 168 disadvantaged children.
The project is part of the 2025 Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign with the theme "Childhood Safety, Swimming in the Green Mountains". Director of the Provincial Social Protection Center Nong Thi Duyen shared: Not only learning to swim, children are also equipped with important life skills to protect themselves. For us - those who do sponsorship work, it is a great joy, the result of joining hands for children. The project "Kình nhi tren nui" not only opens classes but also opens loving arms, giving children a truly safe and meaningful summer.
The journey of "Swimming in the green mountains" of students in the mountainous areas is still ongoing. The initial successes of the "Kình nhi tren nui" project create the premise for the Provincial Youth Union to continue to expand in the coming time. Comrade Nong Thi Nhung, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Chairman of the Provincial Youth Union Council said: Teaching swimming to children in the highlands is not only to prevent drowning accidents but also a way for them to be more confident and develop comprehensively both physically and mentally. The positive response from parents, students and local authorities is clear evidence of the effectiveness and practicality of the project. In the coming time, the Provincial Youth Union will continue to coordinate with functional sectors, mobilize social resources to expand the project to more localities, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to access this essential life skill.
