This Christmas, Lapland - the northernmost region of Finland - is expected to welcome the highest number of tourists in the past 20 years.
Lapland is a vast snowy region in northern Europe. Finland accounts for 30% of the area. Notably, the city of Rovaniemi in Finland - the capital of Lapland - is considered the hometown of Santa Claus.
Lapland is covered with snow all year round because it is located in the northernmost part of Europe.
Every Christmas season, tourists from all over the world flock to Lapland to enjoy the atmosphere and explore the mountains covered in white snow all year round, likened to a fairyland.
"December is usually our busiest time of the year. This year, passenger traffic is at its highest level in 20 years. I expect the airport to set some new passenger records," said Johan Juujarvi, manager of Rovaniemi Airport.
Johan Juujarvi reported that the airport had to hire 20 additional seasonal staff to help operate smoothly the luggage transportation for tourists as well as ensure airport security.
Rovaniemi Airport adds extra flights this winter.
Rovaniemi is considered to be one of the largest airports in Finland in terms of passenger numbers. Air traffic at the airport is particularly busy in winter when travelers come to Lapland to enjoy the snowy scenery and the magic of Christmas, as well as to meet "Santa Claus".
In particular, this winter the airport has 13 more direct flights opened to connect Rovaniemi airport with destinations across Europe, reaching a total of 24 international flights to Rovaniemi.
The number of people flocking to Lapland this year is expected to exceed the pre-COVID-19 pandemic level. Lapland tourism brings in more than 400 million euros in revenue and is expected to increase to 600 million euros in the next 5 years. Therefore, tourism is a very important source of income for the cold Nordic land. According to statistics, the city of Rovaniemi welcomes about 500,000 tourists each year, 60% of whom are international visitors.
Visitors can enjoy the legendary Christmas atmosphere when coming to Lapland.
Lapland covers an area of more than 100,000 km2, covered with snow forests, towering pine trees and many reindeer - the symbol of Christmas.
Rovaniemi is especially famous for its Santa Claus Village, where Santa Claus characters can speak up to 20 languages. Opened in 1965, the park is open year-round, but Christmas is the time when it hosts the most special events.
Auroras are a regular occurrence in Lapland.
In addition, this land also attracts tourists with many activities such as sightseeing to admire the aurora borealis, a fascinating natural phenomenon often seen in the Arctic sky, snowmobile hunting, husky sledding, taking a journey with reindeer and experiencing traditional sauna.
