Nearly 1.7 million teachers and 30 million students attended.

The ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Education sector's tradition and the opening of the 2025-2026 school year took place from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m., broadcast live on VTV1 (Vietnam Television), connected online to all educational and training institutions nationwide with the participation of about 1.7 million teachers and nearly 30 million students nationwide.

All 52,000 schools connected online, opening a school year full of determination and challenges. This is the first time that all educational institutions nationwide will raise the flag and sing the national anthem at the same time in the opening ceremony of the new school year.

This is a rare event in the history of Vietnamese education when all universities and vocational education institutions, from public to non-public, will simultaneously hold opening ceremonies on the same day as preschool and general education levels, combining live in Hanoi and online to educational institutions.

As expected, the ceremony will be attended by leaders and former leaders of the Party and State; leaders and former leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training through different periods; representatives of leaders of ministries, departments, branches, agencies and central organizations; members of the National Council for Education and Human Resources Development, the State Council of Professors; ambassadors, representatives of countries and international organizations in Vietnam; reporters from central and local news agencies and newspapers.

According to the scheduled program, at the ceremony, Party and State leaders will deliver speeches congratulating the 80th anniversary of the Education sector and the opening of the new school year. Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son will deliver a speech commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Education sector and the opening of the 2025-2026 school year; representatives of students nationwide will speak.

Also within the framework of the ceremony, Party and State leaders will present the First Class Labor Medal to the Ministry of Education and Training, give a speech and beat the drum to open the 2025-2026 school year.

Preparations for the opening ceremony

So far, schools are ready for the opening ceremony.

In Hanoi: Hanoi entered the new school year with 2,954 kindergartens and primary schools, serving more than 70,500 classes with about 2.327 million students, an increase of nearly 60,000 students compared to last year. The whole sector has about 129,300 officials and teachers, more than 68,900 classrooms and 29 vocational education and continuing education centers serving nearly 57,000 students. Notably, this year the city has 43 new schools, including 27 public and 16 private. At the same time, it is implementing a plan to recruit nearly 1,000 teachers for high schools.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong affirmed: "We have completed the review, supplemented facilities, recruited additional teachers and promoted digital transformation in management to ensure the best conditions for more than 2.3 million students entering the new school year."

With this year's special opening ceremony, according to the guidance of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, schools will arrange and assign students to attend differently depending on each grade and level. Some kindergartens and primary schools will arrange for students in lower grades to attend the opening ceremony in class, watching on TV screens. The older students will gather in the school yard to watch on LED screens.

Schools can organize school activities from 7-8am. From 8am onwards, schools connect with the opening ceremony organized by the Ministry of Education and Training at the National Convention Center.

In Hanoi, Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary, Secondary & High School - Cau Giay and Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary School - Rubik said they will not accept flowers on the opening day . The school requests that parents and partners, if they wish, can convert the gifts into physical objects or cash to give as gifts to encourage students' spirit at the beginning of the new school year.

All schools in Ho Chi Minh City refuse to accept opening flowers

In Ho Chi Minh City: To ensure the opening ceremony goes well, many schools in Ho Chi Minh City rent large TV screens in the school yard for students to easily watch. After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City has nearly 2.6 million students with more than 3,500 schools, the largest in the country.

On September 3, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training instructed schools to prepare for the opening ceremony of the 2025-2026 school year.

The Department and schools refuse to accept congratulatory flowers in any form, from agencies, businesses, and parents. Schools must promptly announce this policy to parents and partners.

Instead, the Department encourages units and individuals to convert flowers and gifts into donations and practical contributions to the school's scholarship fund or join hands to support people facing difficulties due to storms No. 4 and 5 in the mountainous and midland provinces of the North and North Central regions.

In addition, the Department requires schools to limit decorating stages, podiums, school gates, etc. with fresh flowers, only using them in places that are truly necessary but not ostentatious or wasteful.

Flooded schools make efforts to clean up for the opening ceremony

On the eve of the new school year, many schools in the Central region affected by storms No. 5 and No. 6 are still busy cleaning up and repairing facilities to welcome children back to class in time.

As of August 31, 33 schools in the province were seriously affected. In this situation, the Thanh Hoa education sector has made efforts to coordinate with local authorities to ensure safety and the best conditions for the opening ceremony of the 2025-2026 school year.

In the border commune of Tam Thanh, heavy rains and floods caused hundreds of cubic meters of rock and soil to flood into the Tam Thanh Kindergarten and Primary School in Cha Lung area. On September 1, Tam Thanh Border Guard Station and local authorities assisted the school in clearing rock and soil and doing a general cleaning so that students could start the new school year in time.

Similarly, these days, schools in Ha Tinh are also urgently overcoming the consequences of storms and floods to prepare for the new school year. After storms No. 5 and 6, the whole province has 286 educational establishments severely affected, with estimated damage of nearly 136 billion VND.

Thanks to the support of the police force, army, youth union members and the efforts of teachers, the work of cleaning, repairing, drying tables and chairs, and decorating classrooms is being urgently carried out.

In the warm atmosphere, dozens of sick children dressed in school uniforms, beaming with joy, welcomed the new school year. Many of them were in wheelchairs, had IV drips in their arms, or had bald heads due to chemotherapy, but their smiles were still bright.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc - Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City; Ms. Truong Thi Bich Hanh - Member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City... along with teachers, benefactors and many parents.
