Lai Gia Thanh wins gold medal at 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championship

On May 9, the 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships officially opened in China. On the first day of competition, 3 events were competed early including 45kg and 49kg for women, 55kg for men. We participated in the 45kg for women and 55kg for men.

In the men's 55kg category, two weightlifters, Lai Gia Thanh and Ngo Son Dinh, were registered to compete. However, before the start of the competition, Ngo Son Dinh was injured. Therefore, the Vietnamese weightlifting team only had Lai Gia Thanh competing. As a result, Lai Gia Thanh brought home 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal. The gold medal won by Lai Gia Thanh was in the snatch event when he successfully lifted 120kg. The bronze medal was won by Lai Gia Thanh in the clean and jerk (140kg) and the silver medal was in the total lift with a score of 260kg.

Lai Gia Thanh finished second overall in the total lift. The champion in the men's 55kg category was Wang Weidong (China), with a total lift of 265kg. Third place went to Al Saleem Mansour (Saudi Arabia) with a total lift of 254kg.

The 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championship attracted 171 athletes from 26 countries and territories in the continent to register to compete in 10 men's and 10 women's weight categories. Before the tournament opened, the Asian Weightlifting Federation held an Executive Committee meeting to discuss many technical issues and reach consensus on decisions on a number of future tournaments. Accordingly, the next Asian Weightlifting Championship will be held in 2026 in India and in 2027 in Korea.
