Coming to Moc Van Trang Organic Agriculture Cooperative, Moc Chau ward, I was impressed by the meticulous process of growing and caring for chili peppers, according to VietGAP standards. The entire Sweet Palermo chili cultivation area is grown in greenhouses and installed with drip irrigation pipes to provide irrigation water and fertilizer. This helps prevent diseases from entering the plants, creating a protective layer for the plants. In addition, to manage the garden, the parameters of temperature, humidity, light... in the chili garden are adjusted by him through a sun-blocking net system, so the plants grow and develop well, giving very high yields.
Leading us to visit the Sweet Palermo pepper growing area, Mr. Ha Van Tien, Director of the Cooperative, said: Sweet Palermo peppers have been planted on a trial basis since 2021 with an area of 1,000 m2. Through the trial planting process, it was found that the peppers are suitable for the local climate, the cultivation period of a Sweet Palermo pepper cycle usually lasts more than 8 months; of which, the first 3 months of planting and 5 months after harvest. On average, each Sweet Palermo pepper tree yields 3-5 kg of fruit. Currently, the Cooperative has invested in expanding the planting area to more than 5 hectares; the average yield is 90 tons/ha, the selling price is 35,000 VND to 80,000 VND/kg, bringing in an income of more than 3 billion VND/ha.
Through research, Sweet Palermo is a chili variety originating from the Netherlands; when ripe, there are four color groups: Red, yellow, orange and chocolate, corresponding to four different flavors. When ripe, the chili has a sweet taste and a strong aroma, so it can be eaten fresh like a fruit or used to make juice, salads, mixed dishes, and grilled dishes. This type of chili contains many nutrients, such as: Vitamins, fiber, folic acid, magnesium, potassium... so it is popular with consumers.
Realizing the economic value of Sweet Palermo peppers, in early 2025, Mr. Nguyen Van Loi's family, residential group 5, Moc Chau ward invested more than 2 billion VND to build a greenhouse system and drip irrigation on an area of 1 hectare to grow this pepper.
Mr. Loi shared: Sweet Palermo chili peppers are difficult to care for, and the high-priced standard varieties require growers to thoroughly research the varieties and technical care processes. Therefore, I have to invest in building greenhouses, choosing standard F1 varieties, and implementing watering and fertilization techniques, which are also very important factors. Currently, Sweet Palermo chili peppers are sold by the family to primary markets and through social networking sites. The products are sold as soon as they are harvested. This year's chili crop is expected to yield 100 tons, earning more than 3.5 billion VND.
Having the opportunity to visit Moc Chau plateau and enjoy Sweet Palermo chili in the garden, Ms. Nguyen Kim Dung, Hanoi city, happily shared: The first time I tasted this type of chili, I felt that the chili was easy to eat, not pungent, sweet and fragrant. With high nutritional value and grown in a greenhouse system, consumers can feel more secure about the quality of the product. I personally selected the ripe Sweet Palermo chili in the garden, brought it back as a gift and for my family to use in daily meals.
Efforts to learn and change the thinking in production of cooperatives and farmers, successfully applying the Sweet Palermo chili growing model, creating new quality products, serving consumer needs, enriching the picture of high-tech agricultural production on the Moc Chau plateau.
