Recently, 5 students at Chau Van Liem High School (Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City) suffered minor injuries after a test tube exploded during a chemistry lab. Previously, there were many cases of students being injured while doing experiments.

The question is how to ensure safety for students when participating in practical lessons in the laboratory.

On this issue, physics and chemistry teachers believe that there must be principles to ensure student safety.

Master Pham Le Thanh, chemistry group of Nguyen Hien High School (District 11, Ho Chi Minh City), said that in the chemistry requirement of the 2018 General Education Program, students must practice and manipulate tools. Through that, students study content related to chemical properties, preparation, and application.

Therefore, Master Thanh believes that managing students in the laboratory is necessary to avoid unfortunate incidents.

According to Mr. Thanh, at the beginning of the school year, the department needs to have 1-2 training sessions on skills so that students can understand the rules and safety regulations when entering the laboratory. If an incident occurs, teachers and students (who have been trained) will not panic and will know how to respond according to the correct safety procedures.

Students read the rules carefully and follow the teacher's instructions.

Teachers at Nguyen Hien High School emphasized that teachers need to thoroughly educate students to only do experiments when there is a teacher present in the laboratory, to wear a blouse, protective glasses, rubber gloves, and female students must tie their hair neatly... Students absolutely must not eat or drink, run, or jump in the laboratory. They must not look directly down into the test tube from above, and if there is an incident, they must immediately notify the teacher and laboratory specialist to coordinate the handling.

There are still teachers "burning" the stage

Master Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), emphasized that school safety is a job that does not wait until the season, month, year or when an incident occurs to pay attention, but needs to be monitored regularly. Especially in laboratories, there are chemicals that can be dangerous, so safety principles must be ensured.

According to Mr. Phu, teachers and students need to be equipped with protective gear in the laboratory. Before entering the laboratory, students must carefully read the rules, teachers must instruct on each type of equipment and demonstrate the practice before allowing students to perform.

As a former chemistry teacher, Mr. Phu pointed out that there are still teachers who "skip" the steps, requiring students to practice according to orders without demonstrating, so when an incident occurs, they cannot handle it in time, and students do not know how to respond. "If the operations and procedures are careless, they will cause unpredictable consequences to the health of both students and teachers."

Therefore, Mr. Phu believes that to ensure safety, teachers and students need to master the regulations and follow the correct experimental procedures. The school must also remind teachers to check the equipment and facilities according to regulations and equipment standards.
