Vietnamese Family Home episode 138 was hosted by MC Duong Hong Phuc and two guests, actor Truong Minh Cuong and actress Le Bong. The artists could not hide their emotions when listening to the stories of loss and deprivation of children in especially difficult circumstances. Among them, the circumstances of Pham Thi Loan (2008) in Bac Giang and Nguyen Thi Linh (2008) in Vinh Phuc brought many viewers to tears.
Pham Thi Loan (2008) is studying at Phuong Son High School, Luc Nam District, Bac Giang Province. She lives with her grandmother, mother and younger brother. Loan's mother, Pham Thi Hieu (1981), is mentally unstable, so since she was little she did not know who her father was. Due to poor health and lack of clarity, Hieu just stays at home all day.
Mrs. Pham Thi Hieu (1951) - Loan's grandmother is almost the main breadwinner for the whole family. Mrs. Hieu's income mainly depends on the family's 3.5 sao of land growing lychees. However, this year, Mrs. Hieu is over 70 years old, her health is declining, and she is no longer able to take care of the lychee garden as before. Low productivity and unstable prices make the family's income even more difficult.
To earn income, Mrs. Hieu grows vegetables to sell, earning only about 20,000 - 40,000 VND per day. The vegetables Mrs. Hieu grows are also familiar dishes in the family's daily meals. Feeling sorry for her old grandmother who still has to work hard to make a living, Loan always tries to help with housework, taking care of the lychee garden and helping her grow and pick vegetables to sell. During the summer vacation, she also works as a mango peeler for hire, earning about 40,000 VND per session, helping to support her grandmother.
Pham Van Tung (2014), Loan's younger brother, is studying at Phuong Son Secondary School. Tung is a good student, well-behaved and knows how to help with chores around the house. As for Loan, she is very good at studying and is very hard-working. She won second prize in History in the provincial competition for excellent students. There was a time when Loan thought about dropping out of school because her family was too poor, but she understood that only studying could help her change her life. Loan always nurtured the dream of becoming a History teacher to continue living her passion and inspire future students.
Because her family is poor, Loan receives 150,000 VND per month from the local government. The house she lives in is also funded by the government and completed with contributions from relatives.
Talking on the program Vietnamese Family Home, Loan said she felt very sad without a father, and often wondered why her family was not as complete as her friends'. However, by the time she was in 6th and 7th grade, she gradually accepted it.
Actor Truong Minh Cuong expressed his emotion when witnessing the character's situation. He also lost his father at an early age, so he understands the feelings of Loan and her sister.
“Around 12-13 years old, I understood that I would never have a father again and that I had to try to take care of my family. I sympathized with what Loan and her sister went through ,” the actor confided.
Besides, actress Le Bong was also moved and gave words of encouragement to Loan and her sisters. The actress expressed her admiration for Mrs. Hieu - Loan's grandmother, who, despite being over 70 years old, still works to raise her children and grandchildren. At the same time, the determination of Loan and her sisters to both study and try to help their family earn money also made the actress choke up. Le Bong hopes that Mrs. Hieu will stay healthy so that she can always be a motivation and a solid support for her grandchildren.
Another case of lacking fatherly love since childhood shared in the program is Nguyen Thi Linh (2008), currently studying at Yen Lac Continuing Education Center, Yen Lac District, Vinh Phuc Province. Born into a family with difficult circumstances, Linh has never known who her father is. She grew up in the love and care of her mother - Nguyen Thi Dinh (1969).
The mother and daughter are currently living in a temporary house built in 2010 on the land of their uncle (mother’s brother). The house is only 9 square meters, enough for a bed, a kitchen and a small walkway. The daily activities of the mother and daughter are extremely inconvenient.
Previously, Ms. Dinh earned a living by sorting scrap fabric for hire, earning about 100,000 VND per day. However, since March 2025, her health suddenly declined, she often fainted, was diagnosed with a cerebral infarction and showed signs of a stroke. After a period of treatment, she returned home but her health was weak, limiting her ability to work.
Despite her difficult and deprived circumstances since childhood, Linh studied very hard and achieved good results. In grade 10, she was selected to the school's excellent student team and won an encouragement prize in the provincial excellent student competition. However, because her mother suddenly fell ill, Linh wanted to quit school to go to work to earn money to buy medicine for her mother. Linh burst into tears because she was afraid of leaving her studies unfinished, but even more afraid of losing her mother, the only relative by her side.
Understanding her situation, the school has mobilized donations from many sources to support her mother's treatment as well as encourage Linh to overcome difficulties. Linh herself is also a strong-willed girl, she often goes to the fields to work, cultivating her family's 1 sao of rice field. In addition, she also does extra jobs such as weeding, picking chili, planting onions, etc. Linh shared that she really wants to study well, wants to become a nurse to earn money to support her mother as well as take care of people with poor health like her mother.
When listening to Linh's story, MC Duong Hong Phuc could not hide his sadness. Especially when seeing the image of mother and daughter having to live in a house of only 9 square meters for many years, he admired her will to overcome difficulties and study well. He gave many words of encouragement and motivation for Linh to continue to keep her faith to change the future.
Once again, actor Truong Minh Cuong was moved when he found himself in Linh's situation. The actor lost his father at the age of 7 and understands the emptiness of children lacking paternal love. "I used to be someone who often felt inferior about my childhood and an imperfect home like everyone else. But then I gradually accepted and healed that wound myself ," he said.
More than anyone, the actor understands the feelings of children who lost their fathers early and do not have a complete family. “When I was young, whenever something happened, I always wished that my father would be there to share and help, but that never came true. When my friends encountered difficulties at school, their fathers would come to solve the problem or defend them, but I did not. At those times, I felt very sad, just wishing that I could have that simple thing. On important occasions such as semester exams or transfer exams, I also craved a word of encouragement from my father. There were times when I was sad, I just wished that someone, my father, would sit by my side to share. Since I was young, I have clearly experienced the absence of fatherly love,” Truong Minh Cuong emotionally shared.
He said that his childhood was not only lacking in affection but also filled with material difficulties. From a young age, Truong Minh Cuong had to help his mother take care of his younger sibling and work with his mother to earn money to support their lives. “ My childhood was mainly spent taking care of my younger sibling and taking care of my family, and I didn’t have much time to play like my friends. I always had to shoulder everything with my mother, ” the actor shared.
“There were times when life was so difficult that it seemed impossible to overcome, but my mother and I encouraged each other to try harder. We hid our sadness inside and continued to make efforts every day. We didn’t have many relatives at home, so I soon realized that if I didn’t save myself, no one would do it for me.”
The actor of “Flip Side 7” believes that difficulties are the motivation for him to try harder in life. Coming to the Vietnamese Family Home, he wants to share his experiences with the children, and at the same time contribute a part of his strength to help them overcome difficulties.
