Marriage is a significant milestone in a person's life, so every couple wants their wedding to be grand and joyful before entering married life. Besides traditional wedding ceremonies, some young people nowadays choose a very sacred Buddhist wedding ceremony called "Hang Thuan."
The "Hang Thuan" ceremony is similar to a regular wedding, but it is held at a temple. There, the bride and groom are formally declared married by a Buddhist monk, who performs the blessing ceremony, prays for the couple's happiness, and exchanges wedding rings.
Preparing for married life, the young couple LTTT and NVT, originally from Quang Tri province and residing in Nghia Thanh ward (Gia Nghia city), decided to return to their hometown to hold their wedding ceremony at a temple. On their wedding day, the bride and groom, along with their families and friends, dressed in ceremonial attire, walked in and stood side-by-side in the center of the main hall of the temple.
Wedding ceremonies held at temples are conducted as a prayer for peace and have various names such as the wedding prayer ceremony; the wedding ceremony; the wedding blessing ceremony… The main part of the "Hang Thuan" ceremony is a short sermon by the officiant before exchanging rings with the bride and groom, advising the young couple to live according to the Dharma and moral principles of life…
Afterward, the bride and groom recited five vows, vowing to follow them in order to maintain a peaceful and happy family life. After each vow, the temple bell rang out, as if bearing witness to the promises of the young couple.
Weddings at temples are full of rituals but are very warm and economical. Mr. NVT said: “Having the wedding ceremony at the temple is a good thing; it makes me feel more responsible towards my family and my wife.” Ms. LTTT added: “Having the wedding at the temple and receiving the blessings of the monks and Buddhist followers, I feel very happy. I hope that my married life will be complete and happy. Especially, I was grateful to hear meaningful teachings about marital ethics and the importance of patience, so that we can live together for a lifetime.”
"Hằng Thuận" means that husband and wife always live in harmony, in agreement, with mutual respect, fulfilling their duties as husband, wife, and child, always striving towards the path of self-cultivation, enlightenment, and goodness. Especially in the presence of the Buddha and the Sangha, the bride and groom will feel the importance and sacredness of the wedding ceremony. These principles will be a solid foundation before the couple begins their married life.
