On the morning of August 2, in Hai Phong city, the Party Committee and the Navy Command solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first victory of the Vietnam People's Navy and the people of the North. Attending the ceremony were Senior Lieutenant General Pham Hoai Nam, member of the Party Central Committee, member of the Central Military Commission, Deputy Minister of National Defense ; Senior Lieutenant General Vu Hai San, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of National Defense, and comrades who are heads of agencies and units under the Ministry of National Defense, and representatives of coastal provinces and cities. On the side of Quang Ninh province, attending was Comrade Vi Ngoc Bich, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council.
More than 60 years ago, in early 1964, in order to proactively deal with the plots and tricks of the US imperialists to "escalate" the war and protect the socialist North, the Party Central Committee, the Government, directly the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of National Defense entrusted the Party Committee and the Navy Command to urgently prepare all aspects to fight to protect the sea, coastal lines, ports, river mouths and bases; ready to join the army and people of the North to defeat the US invaders who escalated their attacks on the North.
Under the direct leadership of the Central Military Commission and the General Command, on August 2 and 5, 1964, after 9 years of construction, the Vietnam People's Navy, for the first time, after 9 years of establishment, joined forces to fight, closely coordinated with the Air Defense Force, the armed police, and the local people and army in coastal areas to fight bravely, driving the American destroyer Madoc out of our waters, shooting down 8 planes, injuring many others, capturing the first American pilot in the waters and skies of the North; opening a glorious history of fighting and victory for the Vietnam People's Navy; contributing to encouraging the entire Party, people, and army to be determined to fight to protect the North, promote the revolutionary war to liberate the South, and unify the country.
In Quang Ninh province, on August 5, 1964, many groups of modern American jet planes from the 7th fleet flew in to bomb and shell our naval port in Bai Chay and some places in Hon Gai town. With a spirit of vigilance and combat readiness, and high coordination, the army and people of Quang Ninh shot down 3 American planes, of which 2 crashed on the spot.
Speaking at the ceremony, Senior Lieutenant General Pham Hoai Nam, member of the Party Central Committee, member of the Central Military Commission , Deputy Minister of National Defense emphasized that the victory of the first battle of the Vietnam People's Navy and the people of the North was a victory of the heroic fighting spirit and selfless sacrifice of our compatriots and comrades. The Party, the State, the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of National Defense always remember and pay tribute to the heroic martyrs, wounded and sick soldiers, martyrs' families, leaders, commanders, officers, soldiers and people who participated in the battle to make this historic victory. We would like to sincerely thank the Party Committees, authorities and people of the localities, especially the coastal provinces and cities (Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Binh) for always coordinating and creating favorable conditions for the Army units in general and the Vietnam People's Navy in particular to successfully complete all assigned tasks.
The 60th anniversary of the First Victory of the Vietnam People's Navy and the people of the North, organized by the Party Committee and the Navy Command, has great educational significance. Inheriting and promoting the tradition of the First Victory, all officers and soldiers of the Navy vow to promote revolutionary heroism to the highest degree, be absolutely loyal to the Party, the Fatherland and the People, continue to strive, overcome all difficulties and hardships, act as the core with the forces to manage and firmly protect the sacred sovereignty of the sea, islands and continental shelf of the Fatherland, worthy of the trust and love of the Party, the State, the Army and the People.
