According to UNHCR, in the latest incident on June 12, a group of people armed with guns and machetes attacked Lala camp - a gathering place for displaced people in Ituri province, eastern DRC - killing at least 45 people and injuring dozens.
Mr. Valentin Tapsoba - Director of UNHCR's Southern Africa Regional Office - criticized these as "heinous attacks targeting vulnerable civilian populations". He also emphasized the resurgence of violence, causing serious concern in the region, affirming the urgent need for sustained efforts to address the causes of conflict and promote lasting peace and stability.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Africa, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo - Ms. Bintou Keita also strongly condemned the attack. In a press release on the evening of June 12, Ms. Keita - who is also in charge of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) - said the massacre was carried out by rebels of the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO).
Ms. Keita stressed that MONUSCO has coordinated with local authorities to strengthen security measures in the area, making efforts to prevent similar attacks and subjecting attackers to appropriate punishment.
The MONUSCO chief reiterated her call on all armed groups to immediately cease acts of violence against civilians. She also specifically called on the CODECO armed group to respect its commitments under the ARU Dialogue Memorandum of Understanding signed on 1 June and to participate in the Programme for Disarmament, Demobilization, Rehabilitation and Community Stabilization (PDDRCS).
