Break the wall, break the wall! I'll pay for all the damage!
Mr. NH (27 years old, victim's husband) recounted the first words his father said at the scene - where Ms. NTTH (32 years old) fell from the 4th floor and was stuck between two 20m high walls.
On June 16, Ms. H. was given a day off from work to stay home. At around 8:30 a.m., her family discovered Ms. H. stuck in a gap between two houses on Ngo Quyen Street, Ward 6, District 10.
Not taking into account all dangerous situations
The night before, Ms. H. learned that her cat, which had been away from home for a few days, was down there, so she decided to climb down to look for it, but her husband stopped her. The husband intended to use specialized rescue equipment to climb down to save his pet, but unexpectedly, his wife "recklessly" did it first.
"The next morning, I was sleeping when I heard my wife calling for help," Mr. H. recounted.
He is a security officer at a consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, has been professionally trained for more than 8 years, has experienced many "difficult" situations before, and was shaken when he saw his wife in trouble.
Meanwhile, according to the victim, after a moment of panic due to the sudden fall, she regained her composure and tried to breathe evenly to keep her heart rate stable. Seeing that her body had a bleeding wound, Ms. H. decided to sit still and not move much to avoid blood loss.
After calling the rescue team for help, Ms. H. heard the siren so she waited with peace of mind, believing that the rescue team would successfully rescue her.
The petite woman told reporters that she was a customer service employee at a beauty salon, had a history of low blood pressure, and did not exercise much. Knowing her health condition, she had to stay calm.
"I had calculated the risk of falling so I consciously wore a helmet, sneakers and tied a parachute cord (the type used to tie a hammock) across my waist. However, I did not expect the cord to break," the victim said.
Fortunately, before falling, Ms. H. had climbed down to between the second and third floors of the four-story house. The woman’s entire body slid against the rough cement surface of the two walls. When rescued, the victim had scratches all over her body and needed many stitches for a laceration on her knee.
Definitive rescue plan
"Fortunately, the distance from the unit headquarters to the victim's house is only about 800m and the road is clear, so we were able to reach the scene quickly," said Captain Phan Cong Hanh (37 years old), of the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Team of District 10 Police.
After receiving the call from Ms. H., dozens of officers, soldiers and many specialized vehicles arrived at the scene to carry out rescue work.
Seeing that the victim was still conscious, the authorities talked and encouraged him to calm down and cooperate with the rescue team.
"After observing the scene, we considered the option of breaking down the wall, however, the operation would take a lot of time, while the principle is to find the fastest way to avoid weakening the victim," said Captain Hanh.
Authorities deployed two teams. One team used hydraulic shears to cut the third-floor window of the neighbor's house. Another team on the fourth-floor rooftop lowered a rope to rescue the victim.
Two lines and a life jacket were dropped down to Ms. H. One line had a loop around the entire body, the other line was to support the body's weight, and the jacket was to prevent the victim from being scratched.
"Pull the victim up quickly, if you are slow, the victim's body will rub against the wall and sharp metal sheet," Captain Hanh explained.
According to the rescuer, Ms. H.'s knowing how to tie the rope herself to prevent danger was just a spontaneous idea. However, the victim lacked the knowledge of how to use the rope properly.
Through this incident, Captain Hanh recommends that people learn about self-protection before acting in dangerous situations.
