International Children's Day (November 20) is the annual day of action for children by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. But this year, in many places, children are under attack.
According to statistics, more than 4,500 children have died in Gaza since the conflict broke out on October 7. On average, every 10 minutes, a child in Gaza dies, if not from bombs or bullets, then from lack of necessary medical care. What children in Gaza and anywhere else in conflict have to endure is the most painful reality, reminding the world that the task of protecting the rights of young citizens has not been completed, even if it is the most basic right - the right to life.
The UN report on violence against children 2023 states that children are increasingly at risk of violence. This is not to mention that global trends such as digital technology , climate change, protracted conflicts and large-scale migration are radically changing their childhoods, leading to new threats. The internet will continue to fragment and lead to greater disparities for children in the goal of openness, equity and inclusion. Child data governance and child protection in cyber conflicts have become new priorities.
Millions of children around the world are deprived of their basic rights amid economic and political shocks, growing interdependence in an increasingly integrated world. This is why UNICEF’s theme for this year’s International Children’s Day is “For every child, every right” as a poignant reminder: Every child, everywhere, has the right to live in a peaceful world.
The roadmap has been outlined, and the implementation mission of the Convention on the Rights of the Child has also brought about remarkable progress, but if the upcoming response measures continue to fall short of reality, the goal of ending all forms of violence against children by 2030 will remain far away.
