At the World Championships in August in Saudi Arabia, Le Van Cong excelled over Omar Qarada (Jordan), winning the gold medal in the 49 kg weight class with a score of 176 kg. The 39-year-old athlete from Ha Tinh also holds all three records in this weight class, including the world record (183.5 kg), the Asian record (183.5 kg) and the Asian Para Games record (181.5 kg).

Unfortunately for Le Van Cong, he suffered a torn shoulder muscle injury before the Asian Para Games and had to take anti-inflammatory and painkillers to participate in the event. Suppressing the pain, the 2016 Brazilian Paralympic champion failed in his first attempt at the 170 kg weight. Not giving up, Le Van Cong decided to increase the weight to 171 kg and successfully performed it to the joy of the coaching staff and teammates.

With the successful lift of 171 kg, Le Van Cong was sure to win at least a bronze medal, so he raised the weight to 173 kg to compete for the silver medal with Al Sudani (Iraq). Le Van Cong continued to succeed at 173 kg, but Al Sudani also successfully lifted this weight and ranked higher thanks to the secondary index (competing first). The gold medal went to Omar Qarada (Jordan) when he successfully lifted 182 kg, breaking Le Van Cong's Asian Para Games record set in 2014.

"I was in pain so I didn't practice any sessions when I went to Hangzhou. Before the competition, I didn't know if I could lift the weights. I thought about the possibility of having to give up, but then I accepted the pain to compete. I didn't win the gold medal, missed the chance to win the silver medal, but with this injury, I have to be satisfied with the results I achieved," Le Van Cong shared.
