"If we evaluate based on performance criteria, Quang Hai is not worthy. Cong Phuong is the same," coach Philippe Troussier answered the question about the presence of Cong Phuong and Quang Hai - players who have not played for a long time at their clubs but are still on the Vietnamese national team.
Mr. Troussier added: " Based on current form, many players do not deserve to be called up to the national team based on their performances at the club. However, I called the list of 34 people to create a comparison, to have an overall picture of the player's ability ."
Quang Hai is a mainstay of the Vietnamese team under coach Park Hang Seo.
According to the French coach, players like Nguyen Quang Hai and Nguyen Cong Phuong are experienced, having played more than 10 matches for the national team. Some other players are not in good form at their clubs but played important roles in the national team in the previous period. Therefore, coach Troussier still summoned them for testing.
" I respect the experienced and prestigious players in the Vietnam team," Mr. Troussier explained.
"In Quang Hai's case, he doesn't deserve to be on the Vietnam national team with what he has shown, but I want to strengthen his spirit. Quang Hai is already an important player for the national team. Before, he scored goals and shone at important times. Now he just needs confidence."

The next group of players that Coach Troussier mentioned are those who have rarely or never been on the Vietnam national team. These are the faces that have made a good impression in the club's shirt recently.
" They play well at the club but that does not mean they will play well at the national team and fit my philosophy and requirements. They have to go through the next week of training. The players need to learn how to operate, show responsibility, desire, and meet my criteria. To say they are suitable, we need to wait for more testing time ," Mr. Troussier assessed.
The head coach of the Vietnam national team affirmed that his principle of selecting players is still to prioritize players with good form. However, that only applies to training sessions for official tournaments. Meanwhile, the friendly matches of the Vietnam national team in June are for testing and evaluation purposes.
Coach Troussier added: " Calling up players in good form is only for shortening the list in official tournaments, such as the World Cup qualifiers this November.
Right now everything is just starting. I have to go through the testing process, getting to know the players. They also need to get used to my philosophy. I create conditions for them. There is no boundary between U23 and the national team in this training session. I have a list of 100 players aiming for the 2026 World Cup. The youngest is 17 years old, the oldest is 28. On that journey, we cannot rely on 10 or 20 players .
