In an interview published on May 2, Mark Zuckerberg had many candid responses when talking to Stratechery founder Ben Thompson. Here, he expressed dissatisfaction with Apple, a major partner, which also negatively affected Facebook's ability to expand.
In the early stages, a large number of third-party games and applications were built and distributed on Facebook. This was an extended interaction channel, leveraging the user base, helping to increase engagement with the platform. Social networks also attracted new customers, interested in games. Simple game networks such as FarmVille exploded in the 2010s.
However, Apple's app management policies have hindered Facebook's ability to grow in this area.
“When we moved everything from the desktop to the phone, Apple just said, ‘You can’t have a platform on a platform, you can’t have apps.’ I think at that point it was about 20% of the business. But basically, it didn’t have a future. So the company tried other options,” Mark Zuckerberg said about the impact of Apple’s policies on the development of Facebook’s gaming segment.
However, Apple was not the only cause of this demise. In the early 2010s, the social network had to improve user privacy. From then on, apps were restricted from accessing certain APIs. This partly affected the ecosystem of apps built on Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg also expressed deep disagreement with Apple. “I think the dissatisfaction comes from Apple’s policy of saying ‘you can’t do things that we think are valuable.’ The situation exacerbates the conflict,” said the CEO of Meta.
In recent years, Meta has been greatly affected by the policy of managing information collection on iOS. Apple gives users the right to limit tracking applications. As a result, Facebook's ability to track and collect data to provide advertising is no longer accurate. This is given as one of the reasons for Meta's short-term revenue decline.
The social network then changed its algorithm, providing additional "pixels" for advertisers to identify their audience. However, Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly spoken out against Apple's policies.
