Renzo Piano and his " world- changing" works

Born in 1937 in Genoa, Italy, Renzo Piano is known as one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. From a young age, he and his partner - Richard Rogers excelled in overcoming more than 600 competitors around the world, including many famous architects, to win the right to design the beloved project of former French President Georges Pompidou, a cultural heart in the middle of ancient Paris - the Georges Pompidou Center.

In an interview with Renzo Piano in 2018, CNN described him as a "charming" Italian. That charm is exuded by his warmth and approachability. Renzo Piano always works quietly, contributing to humanity, with works that can "change the world". The British daily, the Financial Times, calls Renzo Piano a tireless intellect, although now, at nearly 90 years old, behind his blue eyes is still a strong desire for humanity.

In all his works, he expresses his strong feelings for nature, culture and people. He once designed a children's hospital in Uganda, with red clay, wood, sand and gravel..., materials that moved him when he came to this country on the "black continent". The New York Times once called Kansai Airport, Renzo's work, "the most spectacular building ever built, an impressive engineering work", because the airport has a thin and light structure to deal with the risk of earthquakes.

In his native Italy, he was also called a "hero" when he founded the G124 group of young architects, paid to build works to restore the country's suburbs. Or out of compassion after the collapse of the Morandi Bridge, he donated the design of a new bridge across the Polcevera River to his hometown and spent a year directly supervising its construction.

With his contributions, Renzo Piano was the first Italian to be included in the top 100 most influential people in the world, according to TIME magazine in 2006. In addition, he also received many prestigious awards during his 60-year career, such as the Pritzker Prize, considered the Nobel Prize of architecture.

Humanistic imprints in "lifetime" works

Renzo Piano has a strong feeling for the cultural values of humanity. Therefore, his works always honor the cultural core of the land where they reside.

The Jean Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center designed by him in New Caledonia resembles wooden sails soaring into the sky. These ten “sails” appear and blend in with the natural environment on Tinu Island, but have a very sturdy structure to withstand storms with winds of over 240 km/h. Renzo Piano has a special love for the local cultural roots - the Kanak people, so he not only uses local materials - iroko wood, but also applies traditional construction techniques to create a wonder of modern architecture and green architecture.

In Italy, Renzo created the Parco della Musica chamber music complex, which not only enriches Rome’s vast cultural heritage, but also re-invents a seemingly abandoned, desolate area. The auditoriums are designed like a music box, clustered together to form an impressive outdoor space. In 2007, more than 730 events were held here and the number of visitors reached nearly 530,000. Today, Parco della Musica is in the hearts of Romans as well as tourists with hundreds of major cultural and artistic events held.

In Switzerland, Renzo Piano also left his special mark with the Paul Klee Museum named after the Swiss musician, painter, and poet who is ranked as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. With a passion for the terrain of the eastern suburbs of Bern, Renzo Piano had the idea of creating a spacious island filled with green trees, flowers, and leaves. From there, an architectural work will emerge in the shape of three hills like three soft waves.

Concentrating a lifetime's worth of effort on the 'final work' - Hanoi Opera House

At the age of nearly 90, Renzo Piano has a special love for the culture and historical sediments of Hanoi, a thousand-year-old civilization. He wants to devote all his heart, energy and the entire essence of his life to the project that he considers his "last work" and dedicate it to Hanoi: Hanoi Opera House.

Having spent 40 years researching thin-shell structural technology - an extremely complex and sophisticated technology, Renzo wishes to apply this cutting-edge technology for the first time to the dome of the Hanoi Opera House. In a shape reminiscent of the waves on the surface of West Lake, the dome of the theater appears soft and poetic but still has a strong contemporary feel.

The design is inspired by the movement of lake water, the simple, pure beauty of pearls.

In particular, the dome uses the pearl effect to honor the simple, original and pure beauty of nature. West Lake is associated with moments that have entered the poetry and hearts of Hanoians, and the pearl will reflect that movement of time on the dome. The Opera House will therefore tell the story of West Lake, with magical moments, sometimes purple, sometimes covered in mist, sometimes reflecting the brilliant orange light of the sun... With the Hanoi Opera House, Renzo Piano will revive a cultured Hanoi, not only with cultural values that have stood the test of time, but also with an advanced culture, approaching the quintessence of the world.

The investment of patriotic businesses, along with the talent and dedication of Renzo Piano, is expected to bring Hanoi an iconic cultural work, making the capital a destination for international art lovers.

On April 28, the Hanoi People's Committee signed a decision approving the investor (a member of Sun Group) to build this dream theater. The project has a total estimated investment capital of VND12,756 billion (about USD500 million).
