Bui Thinh Da said that in 6th grade, he accidentally surfed the internet and learned about Bid dolls (also known as ball-joint dolls). He was impressed and interested in learning more. In 7th grade, Da shaped his own style by pursuing Pop Surrealism, leaning towards mystery and magic. This style is quite picky about its players.

With three main materials: clay, plastic and porcelain, Da has made hundreds of ball-jointed dolls to date. In particular, in 2014, Da carried out the "Vietnam" project, making traditional dolls dressed in Nguyen Dynasty costumes. Da's Vietnamese dolls have both male and female versions. In particular, the female version attracts viewers' attention with its rustic, gentle beauty but no less noble and elegant.
Recently, Da has caused a stir in the market when launching a product of realistic portrait dolls priced from 10 to 20 million VND/piece. This doll requires elaborateness, requiring up to 500 hours of continuous meticulous labor to complete.
This guy’s dolls are unique, made to order. Each product is designed based on the customer’s real image, from face, expression to hairstyle, outfit… The dolls can pose and change outfits just like real people. This helps each doll become a living work of art, clearly expressing the personality and characteristics of each person.
At first, Da only made dolls based on his personal preferences, but gradually more and more people became interested and wanted to own their own version of the doll. That was the motivation for Da to turn the idea into reality. The first two works were a 31 cm tall male doll and a 28.5 cm tall female doll, each detail meticulously crafted.

"Realistic portrait dolls are much more expensive than other dolls I make because all the details have to be handmade, carefully crafted to ensure the sophistication. Each realistic doll is absolutely unique, there are no duplicates and we guarantee that it will not be reproduced for any other reason," Da explained.
To complete a realistic portrait doll, it must go through many meticulous stages: kneading clay, making the skeleton, molding, baking, sanding, smoothing, applying makeup, stretching strings, making hair and clothes... All stages are done by hand, requiring patience and high technique. In the complicated stages mentioned above, the most difficult part is breathing life into the doll to accurately resemble the human model.
Thanks to their uniqueness and high personalization, realistic portrait dolls quickly attracted the attention of young people. Many people ordered them to preserve their own image, as gifts or to commemorate important moments. To date, Da has completed more than 40 orders of realistic portrait dolls for domestic and foreign customers.
