This year's April 30th holiday season, cinemas witnessed competition between two Vietnamese projects from big names in the film industry.
Director Ly Hai continues to conquer the action film genre with "Lat mat 6: The ticket of destiny", in the roles of director and producer. Meanwhile, Thu Trang takes on the role of producer and main actress in the psychological comedy "Con Nhót mot chong".
The duo both set their film release dates for April 28. Two artists with different roles, both making fans look forward to it.
"Face Off 6: The Fateful Ticket" and "Con Nhót Mot Chong" are both expected to achieve high revenue.
"Con Nhót nhớp chồng" surpasses 24 billion VND even though it has not officially been released in theaters
Thu Trang is famous for her "good hand" in film production, including: "Sister Thirteen: 3 Days of Life and Death" (2020, over 100 billion VND), "Super Easy Job" (2022, over 68 billion VND), "Playboys Don't Fear Outlaw Children" (2022, over 45 billion VND)...
This time, the actress developed the film project "Con Nhót mot chong" based on the web drama "Chuyen xom tui" which attracted attention when it was released in 2020.
In particular, she also played big when she joined hands with Vu Ngoc Dang - the person behind a series of recent blockbusters such as: "Bo gia" (revenue of 420 billion VND) and "Chi chi em em 2" (revenue of 121 billion VND).
According to Box Office Vietnam statistics, "Con Nhót nhớp chồng" has reached a revenue of 24.4 billion VND, even though it has not yet officially released in theaters.
The film is set in a rundown residential area of working people and unemployed people. The story revolves around a family of two living in a poor working-class neighborhood.
Mr. Xin (Thai Hoa) became an alcoholic after a life event. His daughter, Nhot (Thu Trang) was often upset because of her father's drunkenness but still took care of him every little thing.
Thu Trang - Thai Hoa play father and daughter in "Con Nhot Mot Chong"
"Con Nhót nhớp chồng" brings together a quality cast. Thu Trang and Thai Hoa, known as "box office guarantee" actors, also had an impressive "double sword" performance.
Thai Hoa successfully portrayed the image of a humorous, lovable but hidden father - carrying the pain of not being able to give his children a complete family.
Thu Trang did not seem to be at a disadvantage when acting with her veteran co-star. She transformed flexibly when playing the role of Nhot - a straightforward woman, with a thorny appearance, but always longing for happiness.
Perhaps the most haunting scene of Nhót is when she realizes that she has a disease that makes it difficult to have children, and desperately asks for help from an acquaintance. Even director Vu Ngoc Dang had to admit that the role of Nhót combines all of the actress’s strengths.
Despite its advantages, "Con Nhót mot chong" still has some unfortunate disadvantages. It can be mentioned that there is a lack of appearance of characters such as: Aunt Hong (NSND Hong Van) - a grocery store owner and love advisor; Manh (Tien Luat) - a reformed prisoner who conquered Nhót's heart; Nhót's three best friends - Boi (Huynh Phuong), Dam (Thai Vu), Gia (Vinh Rau)...
Director Vu Ngoc Dang is famous for being meticulous in every camera angle and frame arrangement, however, after "Bo gia", "Chi chi, em em" 2... the audience probably still expects a bigger bang from this director.
Not to mention, the film's cinematic quality is still limited. "Con Nhót mot chong" has predictable script errors, or the forced mention of the concept of having children to avoid loneliness in old age, or the concept that women are forced to have children...
Two-horse race on April 30
Choosing to release the film during the April 30 holiday season, Thu Trang's film has many advantages when choosing a family theme - a dish that has been loved by many Vietnamese audiences recently.
However, the project has to compete directly with Ly Hai's "Flip Side 6: Fateful Ticket" so its ability to lead the box office is reduced.
In particular, over the past 10 years, Ly Hai's "Flip Side" brand has become a film series with a fast growth rate, with many works in the "top" of the Vietnamese film market.
For example, "Flip Side 2: Film Studio" (80 billion VND, was the Vietnamese film with the highest box office revenue in the country in 2016), "Flip Side 3: Three Disabled Guys" (85 billion VND, 2018), "Flip Side 4: House of Guests" (120 billion VND, 2019) and "Flip Side 5: 48H" (150 billion VND, 2021).
Ly Hai's "Flip Side 6" is about a group of friends planning to dig up a grave to find a lost lottery ticket worth 136.8 billion VND.
According to the latest information from the distributor, as of April 26, the 6th part of Ly Hai's film has sold 128,000 tickets, becoming the Vietnamese film with the highest number of pre-sold tickets of all time.
Statistics from Box Office Vietnam show that the revenue of "Flip Side 6" has exceeded 17.8 billion VND (as of the afternoon of April 27).
The film revolves around a group of 6 close friends who grew up together in the village. One day, they bought a lottery ticket together and won the jackpot. Just when they thought their lives would turn a new page, the person holding the lottery ticket unfortunately died in an accident. The "fateful ticket" followed him to the grave.
This situation begins to divide the group of friends, stirring up each person's own ambitions and calculations, leading them into a series of unexpected tragedies.
The film stars: Quoc Cuong, Trung Dung, Huy Khanh, Thanh Thuc, Tran Kim Hai, Huynh Thi, Diep Bao Ngoc, Tu Tri...
Sharing with Giao Thong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai - Content Director of CGV noted that Vietnamese cinemas during the April 30 - May 1 holiday season promise to be exciting and full of surprises when witnessing the two-horse race between the two films of Thu Trang and Ly Hai.
However, at this point it is impossible to predict which movie will be the big winner this holiday season.
"The domestic box office market is already unstable and unpredictable. Like the recent Lunar New Year, who would have thought that there would be a 500 billion VND film ("The Godfather" - PV)? We only hope that both films will join hands, achieve impressive revenue, and breathe new life into the market and the entire film production industry.
Of course, the basic formula for selling tickets well is that the movie story must be attractive enough and create good word-of-mouth effect," said Mr. Hai.
According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam, in the first quarter of 2023, Vietnamese film revenue exceeded 700 billion VND, with 5 films released in theaters. "Mrs. Nu's House" led the overall chart with 458 billion VND (accounting for 65% of total revenue in the first 3 months of the year).
Meanwhile, in the whole year of 2022, there were 36 Vietnamese films released in theaters but the total revenue was only more than 670 billion VND.
This is considered a sign of improvement for our country's cinema, after a year of failure with a series of loss-making projects.
