Malaysiakini newspaper revealed on October 17 that a mysterious "broker" is suspected of being behind the falsification of naturalization documents for 7 foreign players playing for the Malaysian national team, causing the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to fall into a reputational crisis.
According to author Nadeswaran, this is a "national trial" as people everywhere talk about the biggest scandal in Malaysian football history.
Seven players, including Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, Hector Hevel and Gabriel Arrocha, were determined by FIFA to have used fake documents to obtain naturalization and play in Malaysia's 4-0 win over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
Malaysian media suspect the scandal was caused by a mysterious broker.
FIFA said FAM had submitted fake birth certificates, claiming the players' grandparents were born in Melaka, Penang or Sarawak, when the original records showed they were all born in South America or Europe. FAM explained this as an "administrative error" caused by staff mistakenly uploading documents from their representatives. However, the National Registration Department of Malaysia (NRD) confirmed that there were no original records, undermining the defense.
The Malaysian newspaper said that this "broker" received a large fee to create fake profiles, while FAM remained silent. "There can only be a broker behind it. This person was paid a lot to create fake Malaysian genealogies" - a part of the article.
In addition, the newspaper and fans' opinions also raised the question: will the 30 million ringgit (more than 187 billion VND) of the team development budget, provided by the government at the beginning of the year, be used for this case?
From the pride of its biggest victory over Vietnam, Malaysia is now facing a crisis of confidence. A Malaysian newspaper even said that the only winner was the mysterious broker: "The only winner is the broker, all he needs is a few pieces of paper and a federation willing to turn a blind eye."
