Bringing e-commerce to Muoi Noi people

On November 21, in Muoi Noi commune (Thuan Chau district, Son La province), the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) coordinated with the Department of Industry and Trade of Son La to organize a training conference to improve e-commerce application skills by 2025. The program was implemented in the spirit of "on-site - on-hand guidance", helping people easily access practical skills such as making short videos, implementing affiliate marketing and promoting local specialty products in the digital environment.

Ms. Quang Thi Phuong - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Muoi Noi commune expressed her concern when talking about the lack of new knowledge related to e-commerce in the locality. According to her, most of the people of Muoi Noi are still familiar with traditional production and consumption methods, and do not have access to modern technology as well as new business trends. Limitations in infrastructure, equipment, network connection and especially the lack of confidence in using digital platforms have made it difficult to bring local products online.

Ms. Phuong shared that even households with typical products such as agricultural products, medicinal herbs, handicrafts, etc., hardly know how to introduce, promote or sell their products over the Internet. Access to e-commerce platforms, social networks or digital promotion tools is still quite unfamiliar. Many people want to learn and change but do not know where to start, while information and support programs rarely reach people in remote areas.

In that context, Ms. Phuong highly appreciated the fact that the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) sent staff to the commune to provide practical guidance. According to her, "hand-holding" and explaining each operation in detail, step by step - from how to create an account, post products, understand sales regulations, to how to promote the brand online - is extremely practical and suitable for the actual conditions of the people here.

We really appreciate this support,” said Ms. Phuong. “Because, Muoi Noi people do not have many opportunities to directly access large training programs, and even less have the conditions to participate in intensive courses. When the officials come to the commune and give such close instructions, people can both understand and follow more boldly. New knowledge about regulations in e-commerce and how to apply them in practice has helped people open up a new direction in bringing local products to a wider market.”

She hopes that, with the support from professional agencies and the initiative of the commune government, Muoi Noi people will gradually become more confident in applying e-commerce, gradually adapting to modern business trends and gradually increasing the value of local products in the market.

Understanding the specific conditions of the highlands – where people face many limitations in terms of equipment, network infrastructure and basic knowledge of technology – Ms. Nguyen Phuong Ly, Deputy Head of Service Information and Training Department, Center for E-commerce and Digital Technology Development – eComDX, Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy has chosen a close, easy-to-understand, step-by-step communication method so that people can grasp and apply it right away.

In her presentation, Ms. Ly did not go into complex techniques but started by helping people visualize the overall picture of Vietnam's e-commerce in the period of 2024-2025: the market is changing rapidly, in which video- based models such as livestream, shoppertainment and short videos account for an increasingly large proportion. She explained that in the present time, buyers often prefer to watch rather than read, so short videos have become the "new language" of e-commerce - only a few dozen seconds but can fully convey the story of the product in an intuitive and vivid way.

Realizing the surprise of people when hearing terms like “short video” or “shoppertainment”, Ms. Ly illustrated with practical examples: videos introducing agricultural products, medicinal herbs, honey or handicrafts – familiar items in Muoi Noi. She showed that with just a phone, a natural light angle and a few simple steps, people can create their own product introduction videos that are much more attractive than posting still photos like before.

The biggest highlight in the guidance of the Department representative is affiliate marketing - a model that is still very new to people in remote areas. Ms. Ly briefly explained: affiliate marketing is a form of other people helping to sell products for you through videos or posts, and only when an order arises will the seller have to share a small part of the commission. This means that people do not have to spend money on advertising themselves, do not need to fully understand the algorithm or run complex marketing. This is a model that, according to Ms. Ly, "is very suitable for Muoi Noi's situation - good products, but limited promotional resources".

Ms. Ly also illustrated how people can cooperate with micro-KOLs, young people who create local content or acquaintances in the area to spread products through short videos or livestreams. Just attach an affiliate marketing link to the video, each successful purchase will be calculated with a clear and transparent commission. When hearing about this model, many students were surprised because it is a way to "sell without having to talk much yourself, without having to advertise yourself, but still reach customers everywhere".

Not only explaining the model, Ms. Ly also guides each practical operation in detail: how to create an affiliate account, how to attach product links to videos, how to track performance and read order data. With the spirit of "learning as you go", people can directly operate on their phones, answering all questions about when to post videos, how to optimize content in the first 3 seconds, or tips for livestreaming to attract more viewers.

Local people and youth practice making short videos for online sales

Thanks to the practical, close and easy-to-apply communication method, the training session helped Muoi Noi people not only access new e-commerce trends but also be able to start selling online right after the session, opening a new door for local products to reach a wider market.

The representative of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy also affirmed that the program in Muoi Noi commune is just one of many activities in the Department's long-term orientation to narrow the digital gap between regions. In the coming time, the Department will continue to coordinate with Son La province and many other localities across the country to deploy training programs suitable to the actual conditions of each region, especially focusing on skills that are becoming trends such as short videos, livestream and affiliate marketing. These are tools to help rural people, cooperatives and small businesses access larger markets without much cost or complicated techniques.

According to the Department's representative, the most important goal is to help people confidently practice immediately, gradually applying e-commerce in a sustainable, safe and effective way. The programs in the coming time will not only stop at disseminating knowledge but also increase on-site practice activities, providing personalized support for each group of typical local products. By sending staff to the place to "hold hands and show the work", the Department hopes to create a practical change in people's awareness and skills, contributing to opening up new economic opportunities for disadvantaged areas.
