Mark Zuckerberg shared the story of building Facebook from scratch 20 years ago at the Stripe Sessions conference. The Harvard alumnus said that at that time, he had to do everything himself because there was no technology like AI today. He pointed out that AI can help founders focus on the core idea of the business.

Zuckerberg previously talked about the impact of AI on large companies, including Meta, on a podcast in January. “Perhaps by 2025, Meta, like other companies, will be using an AI equivalent to a mid-level engineer to program.”
Of course, LLMs are not yet fully trusted, and eliminating mid-level engineers can have serious consequences. Harry Law, an AI researcher at the University of Cambridge, calls ease of use a “double-edged sword.” “New people can speed up the process, but it can also prevent them from learning about system architecture or performance.”
Overuse of AI in programming also makes it difficult to scale or debug. “It can lead to security vulnerabilities if you don’t properly review your code,” he said.
Still, companies are finding ways to use AI more. There’s a buzz in Silicon Valley about “Vibe Coding,” a term coined by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy in early 2025.
In it, he does not program but presents ideas to AI and they deploy themselves from start to finish. His job is just to give commands (prompt) and watch AI work. Sometimes, AI programming ability is beyond his ability, making him ponder.
In an interview with CNBC in March, the CEO of Y Combinator also made a similar point, saying that it helps startups stay lean because small engineering teams can work as effectively as 50-100 people.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed in October 2024 that more than 25% of new code lines at the company are generated by AI. Humans act as reviewers. Using AI to program boosts efficiency and productivity at Google, he said.
Shopify CEO recently asked managers to prove that AI can’t do better before hiring more people, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicted in early February that programming will look very different by the end of the year.
Big tech companies like Google and Meta are leveraging AI to assist, accelerate, or replace their employees. It fits in with the efficiency goals the tech industry has set for the past few years.
Zuckerberg declared 2023 a “performance year” for Meta and has since instituted several rounds of layoffs. Other companies have also cut thousands of jobs as they focus on streamlining and eliminating their worst employees.
