Plane carrying 367 people suddenly caught fire on the runway in Tokyo

Japan's NHK television station reported today, January 2, that a Japan Airlines plane caught fire on the runway at Haneda airport in Tokyo.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been reports that the plane appears to have collided with a Japan Coast Guard plane as it was preparing to land at Haneda Airport.

NHK footage showed flames coming from near the plane's engine area and firefighters working to extinguish the flames. According to the footage, by 6:30 p.m. local time, the plane was almost engulfed in flames.

A spokesman for Japan Airlines said the plane, flight number 516, departed from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido province, carrying 367 passengers and 12 crew members and landed at 5:47 p.m.

In its latest update, NHK cited a statement from Japan Airlines saying that everyone on board had been evacuated. It is still unclear whether anyone was injured.

The Japan Coast Guard is looking into whether its plane crashed at the same time as the passenger plane.

It is not yet clear whether the Japan Coast Guard aircraft was involved in the rescue effort after the January 1 earthquake, nor whether there were any casualties.
