The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft was first delivered to the US Air Force at Joint Base Charleston in 1993.
The US Air Mobility Command primarily operates a fleet of more than 200 C-17s, which have been delivered over the past three decades. These aircraft serve as cargo planes, troop transports, and even flying hospitals.
The C-17 is 53 meters long and 16.7 meters high, with an unmistakable appearance. Four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 engines power the aircraft with enormous thrust.
These engines are so powerful that they are used to slow down aircraft during tactical tests, something a commercial aircraft would never normally be able to do.
All cargo is loaded through the C-17's rear cargo door, which is equipped with a ramp for easy loading and unloading. Helicopters, vehicles, and even the world's heaviest tank, the 69-ton M1 Abrams, can also be transported by the C-17, thanks to its maximum payload of over 77 tons.
Wiring and cabling run along the cabin walls, giving the appearance of an aircraft awaiting completion. And as with any military aircraft, there are few luxuries and fittings inside the passenger cabin.
The C-17 can fly up to 45,000 feet and does not need to land to refuel thanks to its aerial refueling capability.
Only two pilots are required in the cockpit, while a dedicated loadmaster, whose job is to handle the stowage of any cargo or passengers in the rear of the aircraft.
