Her collection received admiration from the online community for its detail, beauty and affordability.
The housewife shared that in 2017, she was surfing social media and saw pictures of people playing with this model. Since she was a child, she loved architecture but had no luck with the profession. So she decided to learn about the hobby, and gradually became addicted without realizing it.
Each model takes her about a week to complete. Because she has a small child, Chi only spends about 1-2 hours a day for herself, meticulously installing windows, flower pots, etc. to decorate the wooden house to make it more eye-catching. As for the small models, she only spends about 2-3 days to complete.
A house costs around 200,000 VND or more. The most expensive one is around 1.5 million VND due to its elaborate details and large size.
Kim Chi with her wooden house model collection
Up to now, the girl's huge fortune includes about 40 wooden house models and more than 10 unassembled ones.
Kim Chi has three shelves just to display models of all kinds, from ancient houses to garden houses... with diverse architecture. "I haven't played with them for a while, so I've lost quite a few old models. If I still have them, there would probably be about 60 models," she said regretfully.
According to Kim Chi, when playing with models, you need to be patient, have a little bit of manual skill and have more money if you like large-sized models. Each basic model has paper, wood and fabric. She usually prioritizes gluing the paper first, then wiring the lights, then cutting fabric to make pillows, curtains, blankets... and then furniture, flowers and plants.
During the process of making the model, she encountered many mistakes. She kept small mistakes as souvenirs, but big mistakes like torn paper or incorrect assembly that could not be disassembled, she had to throw away. There were even many models that had to be thrown away if she was not careful, waiting until the glue dried to discover the mistake. Because when she took it apart, the paper would definitely tear and the wood would break. During the whole process, she estimated that she threw away about 2-3 models.
Any model requires investment of time and effort from the player.
There was a model that was just completed but was destroyed by her child. She felt very sorry but had to sigh and say: "Well, consider it a chance to do it again."
The hardest part of building a wooden house is that the pieces are quite small. Chi’s secret is to read the instructions carefully and work out each detail before starting. When she first built the models, she often put them together incorrectly and had to take them apart and start over, which led to glue sticking to the model and ruining it. The longer she played, the more she got used to it, and she could tell which part to put together just by looking at the small details.
"Making models helps me practice patience, dexterity and creativity. I try to make each model unique. I also learn cutting and flower making techniques for models from friends who share the same passion," she said.
Each model is like a story, making her immersed in every detail. She feels like she is traveling through ancient times. The more elaborate the model is, the more excited she is. There are nights when she is so fascinated that after putting her child to sleep at night, she works hard to assemble it until 3-4am before going to sleep.
Currently, her biggest difficulty is finances . She likes large model kits, so the prices are high. That also means the assembly time is longer. Every month, she saves 500,000 - 1 million VND to buy models, and only buys 1-2 kits.
Beautiful wooden house model collected by Kim Chi
She shared that it took a while for brands to release new models, so she had time to contemplate the old ones. Chi's husband often sat and watched his wife make them. Because his wife liked them, he often gave her money to buy them. One day he joked about selling some of them, but Chi loved collecting so she refused to sell any of them.
Through these models, she hopes that more people will learn about the hobby of playing with wooden models. Whenever you are sad or need to relieve stress, models help you feel more comfortable and happy. Playing with models is also a way to practice patience and concentration. She also hopes to meet many friends who share the same hobby.
"As long as we have passion, we can do it. However, to have a beautiful model, you need to be careful. After just 1-2 first models, you will definitely improve quite a bit. If the model is not beautiful, I am not too sad because after all, it is a model made by my own hands," she said.
