Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station Metro expected to be commercially operational in April 2024

VietNamNetVietNamNet16/11/2023

On November 16, the Standing Committee of the Hanoi People's Council held a conference to meet voters on traffic organization, vehicle maintenance, and road and sidewalk management in the area.

At the conference, responding to voters' opinions on the progress of the urban railway, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan said that after trial operation at the end of this year, the elevated section of the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro project is expected to be put into commercial operation on April 30, 2024.

According to Mr. Tuan, when the elevated section of the Nhon - Hanoi station metro line is put into commercial operation, it will contribute to increasing the city's public passenger transport rate from 19% to 21.5%.

The Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee said that the city is studying two projects to limit personal vehicles: banning motorbikes in districts by 2030 and charging fees for vehicles entering the inner city. However, only when public transport reaches 30-35% will we consider the possibility of limiting personal vehicles.

Hanoi considers urban railways as the “backbone” of public passenger transport and has planned 10 routes by 2030 with a total length of 417km, of which 342km is elevated and 75km is underground. However, only the Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro line is currently in commercial operation after 12 years of implementation.

According to the Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, if the progress of the projects being implemented continues, it will take 150 years to complete the 10 planned urban railway lines.

Therefore, Hanoi is developing a project to speed up the progress of the urban railway project, including mobilizing financial resources. It is expected that the construction of 10 metro lines in Hanoi will cost about one million billion VND.

The Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro project is 12.5km long, with 8 elevated stations and 4 underground stations. Of which, the elevated section (Nhon - Cau Giay) is 8.5km long and the underground section (Cau Giay - Hanoi Railway Station) is 4km long. The total investment of the project is over VND34,800 billion, an increase of over VND1,900 billion.

The project started in 2009 and was expected to be completed in 2015, but the schedule has been adjusted several times. In March, Hanoi City proposed to operate the elevated section of the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro line by the end of 2023; and to operate the entire line in 2027.
