On May 9, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the country had filed a lawsuit against Google after the technology company changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" on the Google Maps application for users in the US.

Speaking at a press conference the same morning, President Sheinbaum confirmed that the lawsuit had been filed, but did not provide specific information about the time and place of filing, and declared that Mexico would pursue this lawsuit to the end.

Previously, on May 8, with 211 votes in favor and 206 votes against, the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives approved a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America,” to legalize the above policy of President Donald Trump.

According to the bill, “any statute, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States that refers to the Gulf of Mexico shall be deemed to mean the “Gulf of the United States.”

The bill also requires each federal agency to update documents and maps with the new name, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum would oversee that.

In February, President Sheinbaum warned Google — a company owned by Alphabet — that Mexico could take legal action if Google did not reverse its decision to change its name.

The Mexican government argues that President Trump's executive order applies only to the continental shelf under US sovereignty .

The two North American neighbors are currently negotiating to reduce tensions amid the global trade war initiated by President Trump, including a series of tax measures targeting Mexico./.
