Aloe vera (also known as aloe vera) is proving to be very suitable for the Ea Na land (Krong Ana district). This crop is a new direction for farmers in the commune to change the crop structure, improve land use efficiency and is encouraged to expand planting here.

Mr. Duong Quang Khang (Tan Tien village) is the pioneer who brought aloe vera plants to Ea Na commune to grow. With only 1 sao of land growing aloe vera, his family has a good income.

The land in his garden was previously used to grow leafy vegetables but the income was not significant. Two years ago, after visiting some aloe vera growing models, he decided to bring the seedlings back to try planting in his garden. According to him, aloe vera is very easy to grow, has many advantages such as good disease resistance, low care, easy to propagate and gives much more economic efficiency than other crops.

Aloe vera is grown without any chemical fertilizers, but before planting, it is necessary to do a good job of soil treatment, such as: mixing in biofertilizers to make the soil loose, making beds and requiring a reasonable plant density arrangement so that the plants can absorb nutrients from the soil. In addition, he raises free-range chickens to limit grass growth in the aloe vera growing area. According to Mr. Khang's calculations, growing aloe vera is quite economical because the initial investment is low, the survival rate is very high and it is not too difficult to take care of.

Mr. Duong Quang Khang (Tan Tien village, Ea Na commune, Krong Ana district) harvests aloe vera.

Aloe vera is harvested for the first time after 9 months of planting. After that, the next crop is harvested regularly every 30 - 40 days. The output of this crop is favorable because the market is quite fond of it. Aloe vera is sold at an average price of 3,200 - 4,000 VND/kg. More than 6,500 plants are grown in the garden, each harvest of more than 3 tons, bringing Mr. Khang an income of nearly 10 million VND. Just counting the aloe vera garden alone, Mr. Khang has a stable income of 100 million VND/year, after deducting all expenses.

He said jokingly: "My family has more than 2 hectares of cocoa, and now 1 sao of aloe vera can bring in an income equal to... 1 hectare of cocoa. Comparing like that, we can see that growing aloe vera is much more effective and stable." Thanks to the income from aloe vera, his family's life has gradually become better.

The market for aloe vera is currently quite easy and has good prices, but to create sustainability in production, Mr. Khang joined the Aloe Vera Cooperative in Buon Ma Thuot City and linked up to consume the product.

Realizing the economic efficiency of aloe vera, the Ea Na Commune Farmers’ Association has encouraged its members to find ways to increase their income from this model. Many local farmers have come to Mr. Khang’s garden to visit, learn and boldly try planting in their family’s garden. Up to now, in Ea Na Commune, there are 5 aloe vera growing models, which are about to enter the first harvest.

Ms. Mai Thi Hang, Chairwoman of the Farmers’ Association of Ea Na Commune, said that growing aloe vera is a new economic model in the locality. This direction is opening up opportunities to increase income for many farming households because it has the ability to increase production value on the same area of cultivated land. If cared for properly and with stable prices, aloe vera plants will be as economically effective as long-term industrial crops.

Meanwhile, the investment and care costs are insignificant. To support farmers in growing aloe vera, in the coming time, the Commune Farmers' Association will organize field trips; coordinate training, provide guidance on planting and caring for aloe vera plants and find ways to connect with consumers for farmers.

It can be seen that aloe vera is a new solution, opening up a direction for many local farmers who want to change crops, improve their gardens, and diversify their crops to increase their income. However, aloe vera growers need to cultivate according to a chain, concentrate on planting and link to the consumer market to facilitate collection, promote consumption, and create stability for production.
