According to RT, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told TASS on October 20 that the European Union (EU) is carrying out sabotage actions ahead of the Russia-US summit scheduled to take place in the Hungarian capital Budapest.
Ms Zakharova's comments came after Spain's El Pais newspaper reported the EU viewed the talks as "a political nightmare".

Citing diplomatic sources, El Pais said the Russia-US summit puts the EU in an "uncomfortable and awkward position" as President Putin and President Trump will discuss a potential solution to the Ukraine conflict in an EU country without the bloc's participation.
Ms Zakharova said Western Europe wanted to "derail any aspirations for peace" regarding the conflict.
“We are seeing statements and threats being made,” she added.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that: "Western European countries are clearly doing everything to escalate the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. They have been acting like this since 2022 when they sabotaged the peace talks between the two sides in Istanbul, Türkiye."
Ms Zakharova added that sporadic statements about the need for peace coming from EU countries were just "camouflage".
“In fact, they are doing everything they can to escalate tensions. It is hard to say whether they really understand what they are doing,” she noted.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Budapest - the venue for the upcoming Russia-US summit - was proposed by President Trump and Russian leader Putin immediately supported the idea. Mr. Peskov added that the summit could take place within two weeks or a little later.
