White House begins demolition of part of East Wing to build ballroom

The White House has begun demolishing part of the East Wing to make way for a ballroom planned by US President Donald Trump.

According to CBS News , the Washington Post was the first newspaper to report on the demolition and published images showing heavy machinery being used in the demolition of part of the East Wing of the White House in Washington DC on October 20 to build a ballroom as planned by President Trump.

"We're building a ballroom, we just started today (October 20), President Trump said at an event, while affirming that this is an "absolutely necessary" project to hold large events.

President Trump previously told reporters in September that construction had begun, but at the time no part of the White House was being demolished.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a social media post from Mr. Trump on October 20, announcing that "construction has begun on a big, beautiful new White House ballroom."

The ballroom's initial planned size is about 8,361 square meters, but that number is likely to increase. The ballroom is expected to seat 999 people, up from the original estimate of 650. Mr. Trump added that the building will have bulletproof glass on all sides.
