A good story but a bad script
The script of the movie "Chiem Dominated" is a remake of the 4-episode TV series "Babysitter" of Korean KBS channel, broadcast in 2016. The movie "Chiem Dominated" itself is the first Vietnamese movie invested in by KBS Media and produced by ERS Factory, distributed and released by CGV Vietnam.
Not to mention this is the first film marking the combination between Miu Le and Karik not in the music field, but in the film field. Therefore, Vietnamese audiences have been eagerly waiting for this remake film.
The promotional trailer and pre-release media campaign also emphasized erotic elements, thriller drama, and the film version being a remake of a Korean TV series.
Phuong Anh Dao and Lanh Thanh in the movie "Occupy"
The film revolves around the life of a wealthy and happy couple who just had a baby. The husband is Son (played by Lanh Thanh) and the wife is Ha (played by Phuong Anh Dao). Ha looks for a babysitter and the beautiful girl My (played by Miu Le) appears innocent and gentle. But then My tries many times to approach and seduce Son, revealing many unexpected secrets and plots. With a good story, although not really new to Korean cinema because there have been some films with similar themes such as "The Housemaid" or "The Taste of Money"... before, when Vietnamizing, it seems that the script will be very favorable, it's just a pity that screenwriter Tran Khanh Hoang is inexperienced.
Perhaps after the noise of "Dat rung phuong nam" which he also wrote and after the movie "Chiem phat", Tran Khanh Hoang still does not have a good quality script for himself.
A hot scene in the movie
Tran Khanh Hoang's challenge was to transform a four-episode TV series into a 113-minute movie script. Tran Khanh Hoang did not have much creativity compared to the original script, and even "lifted" the entire cast of characters from the original TV series into this movie, so many characters appeared but had no role to play, so they were very bland.
Miss Luong Thuy Linh, who plays Son's older sister for the first time in a movie, is a classy, powerful lady but is not portrayed deeply. Karik, who plays Son's best friend Hoang, is also just a minor character, even though his role is promoted as a counterweight to Son.
There are many "flaws" in the movie "Occupy", such as it would be unreasonable to hire Ha, a beautiful female student who has just graduated from school and has no experience in childcare, to be a nanny for a baby just over a year old, who is also the young mistress of a wealthy family. It is also unreasonable that the character My keeps dressing sexily and wandering around the house as if there is no one there. The character Hoang easily confides his most secret things to My even though they have just met and then suddenly fall in love.
Miu Le plays the role of a nanny named My.
The plot of the film is quite simple and does not convince the audience about the drama of the film. Just a few times talking, confiding, acting playful, understanding Son's intentions, My can lure Son into bed with her. Having an affair is too easy if that's all it takes. Just saying a few words of advice to Son's mother (played by Phuong Thanh) about feeding the baby, My immediately won her sympathy even though before that, the mother-in-law character was built as someone who oppresses and is unpleasant to her daughter-in-law Ha.
The film even has some twists that have nothing to do with the content of the film. When the audience sees My's face, the film's plot moves to My's relationship with Hoang, which is quite long and not related to the main theme of the film. Many lines are extremely awkward. When Ha interviews My to become a nanny, she asks an unrelated question: "What will you be like in a year?" or Ha says to Son, which is also very unrelated, even though she shows that she cares for her husband: "Maybe because you work all day looking at the screen, your eyes are tired, drink some honey to warm your stomach."
On VNExpress, viewers of this film rated it 3.1/10. Channel 14 rated it 2/5. The film's box office revenue was also considered poor. Independent box office unit Box Office Vietnam said that despite being shown a week earlier, the revenue of "Chiem Dot" as of November 20 was only 6.4 billion. These numbers do not reflect the whole picture but partly show the quality of the film.
The hot scenes are not impressive.
The film abuses hot scenes to attract viewers but the acting is not up to par, even in many places it is unreasonable and unnecessary. In the beginning of the film, there are quite a few hot scenes from the bathroom, to the bedroom, to the living room, but they do not aim to portray the character's psychology or promote the development of the film, nor do they aim to explain anything. It even makes the audience uncomfortable because the character Son is initially portrayed as a husband who loves his wife, loves his children, is wise, talented but seems too easy to be seduced and is ready to have hot scenes anywhere, anytime.
On the other hand, the hot scenes also do not leave a good impression because the actors' acting is still clumsy, the details of clothes being lifted up, let down, falling... are overused so they do not create an aesthetic feeling for the audience.
A hot scene in the movie
Sound effects such as the characters’ moans were also overused. Even on some fan pages about movies, these hot scenes were discussed humorously. Even the technical quality of the movie was criticized because the colors were still sticky and the images were grainy, showing that the filming, staging, and editing of the movie were not really meticulous.
The music of the film is also not really impressive for a film with a sexy, sensational trend. The plot twists in the film are quite obvious so the audience can easily guess and there is nothing surprising, because right from the beginning the director had My declare: "I will be the one to destroy this family". The reason for the destruction is even easier to guess.
Perhaps both the director and the screenwriter did not distinguish between the character's actions and words. Instead of letting the character act, they used words to explain the psychology. The dense drama in the film is not unfamiliar to the audience, especially those who are fans of Korean cinema. There are affairs, love triangles, quadrangles, conspiracies to fight for power to control the company, between siblings in the family, the motif of the rich mother-in-law - daughter-in-law with the mother-in-law always making things difficult for the daughter-in-law. Even Vietnamese cinema has had works with similar motifs such as "Sister Sister" (2019) or "Sweet Trap" (2022). The film "Occupy" cannot escape the shadow of previous works.
Luong Thuy Linh is said to not be good at acting with stiff and stiff expressions.
Phuong Anh Dao's acting is a plus for the film.
The cast of the movie "Chiem Dominated" is notable because they are all beautiful, famous, and talented. But unfortunately, when they appeared in this movie, many actors performed below their abilities, except for Phuong Anh Dao. Karik acted stiffly and stiffly. Luong Thuy Linh was no better. Especially the voice was strained and had no good expression, thin diction, flat and weak tone. Even Lanh Thanh did not have good diction.
Miu Le only stopped at playing the role well when transforming from an innocent girl into a scheming, cruel, shameless mistress. Perhaps due to her appearance, Miu Le is suitable for playing the role of an innocent, immature girl, but when playing the role of a scheming, resourceful girl, it seems awkward.
Lanh Thanh's role as Son in this film cannot surpass another similar role of his. That is the role of Huy in the film "Chi chi em em" directed by Kathy Uyen, also a husband whose wife brings a young girl home to live with them. Lanh Thanh's acting is very stereotypical of his previous role, nothing new.
Phuong Anh Dao's role in this role can be said to be one of her most successful roles to date.
The role of Ha played by Phuong Anh Dao is a very difficult role to play because of many psychological changes as well as emotional nuances, from a rich young lady who is not liked by her husband's family, to a betrayed wife, forced away from her children, beaten by her husband... Phuong Anh Dao's acting in this film is a bit "overdone" in terms of expression but is suitable for the type of character she plays. Phuong Anh Dao's performance in this role can be said to be one of her most successful roles to date.
Perhaps because it was too general and stereotyped from the TV series, the details in the film were constructed very briefly and the film did not leave an interesting impression on the audience. If the screenwriter had boldly cut down the character lines and some details, the film would have focused on the main theme and given more room for the main actors. The original was a 4-episode TV series, so when converting it into a movie, the script needed to be considered appropriately.
Miu Le is suitable for the innocent role but is awkward in the scheming role. Lanh Thanh's role as Son is somewhat a copy of Huy's role in "Chi chi em em". (Photo: Producer)
