On June 6, Cam My District Medical Center (Dong Nai) announced that it had received a woman who gave birth following the "natural" trend at home, without cutting the umbilical cord and soaking the placenta in a basin of coarse salt.
Previously, on June 2, the mother H (35 years old, living in Bien Hoa city, Dong Nai ) was taken by her family to Cam My District Medical Center for a health check after giving birth at home about 10 hours ago.
When the mother and child were brought to the District Medical Center, the baby boy weighed 3.3 kg and had the umbilical cord intact, and the placenta was soaked in a basin of coarse salt.
Upon admission, the medical staff tried many times to persuade the mother H but she did not agree to be examined, have the umbilical cord cut and the newborn baby boy taken care of. Afterwards, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Ha, Deputy Director of Cam My District Medical Center, directly met, discussed, persuaded and explained the risks of complications and knowledge about mother and baby to the mother.
After about 20 minutes, the mother agreed to have the umbilical cord cut, the baby boy cleaned and examined.
The mother's family said that she has a master's degree and lives in Bien Hoa city, but she returned to her mother's house in Cam My district to live and give birth. This is the mother's fourth birth; the first two were in the hospital, the third was at home. The mother gave birth at home following the "natural" trend.
Despite being advised many times by her family, the mother refused to cut the umbilical cord and insisted on marinating the placenta with salt. After some time of encouragement from the doctors, the mother allowed her family to take her to the Medical Center to check the baby's health.
After cutting the baby boy's umbilical cord, mother H immediately took the baby home, not allowing doctors to check the health of mother and baby.
"Through preliminary assessment, we found that the baby boy was breathing rapidly, wheezing, and had signs of pneumonia, but the mother refused to give antibiotics, refused to be hospitalized for treatment, and insisted on taking the baby home. We reported the situation to the local health station where the mother lived, but we were unable to resolve the issue," added Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Ha.
According to Dr. Dinh Van Suc, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Shing Mark University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, women who give birth at home are at risk of postpartum infection, cervical and vaginal tears, and especially postpartum hemorrhage, which can seriously affect their lives.
In this case, the newborn is susceptible to umbilical infection, pneumonia, and sepsis. In addition, unvaccinated newborns are susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis B.
In particular, the umbilical cord of a baby must be cut within 2 minutes of birth at the latest. Because after birth, the placenta contains many bacteria, if the umbilical cord is not cut quickly, the bacteria will attack the baby causing umbilical infection and blood infection.
Doctors recommend that people absolutely should not give birth at home following the "natural" trend because the lack of safe medical conditions during childbirth can cause obstetric complications, leading to unfortunate consequences for both mother and newborn./.
