On June 26, Ukrainian media shared photos of a Russian-made helicopter with Ukrainian flags and markings flying in an unspecified area.
The helicopter is equipped with two B8V20 launchers, carrying 20 S-8 rockets.

US-supplied Mi-17V-5 helicopter spotted in Ukraine
From March to June, the US pledged to provide Ukraine with 19 Mi-17V-5 helicopters.
These helicopters were originally purchased from Russia for the Afghan military. After the Taliban took power in 2021, the US ended the transfer of helicopters to Afghanistan.
Instead, the US transferred the helicopters to the Ukrainian military. In April, Russia’s Federal Service for Military- Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) issued a protest in response to the US move. In a statement on April 27, FSVTS said:
“FSVTS Russia expresses its protest regarding any illegal transfer of weapons and military equipment of Russian origin, including helicopters, supplied by Rosoboronexport under a major contract with the Pentagon, signed in 2011, to Ukraine.”
The Mi-17V-5 is an export version of the Mi-8MTV-5. The military multipurpose transport helicopter is powered by two Klimov turboshaft engines and is equipped with a loading ramp instead of a rear lift door, an additional door and a new “dolphin nose”.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are familiar with the use of the US-supplied Mi-17V-5 helicopters, which are mainly used for military transport and airborne landing. These helicopters are not equipped with active warning or protection systems and are mainly intended to supplement the Ukrainian transport helicopters, which have suffered heavy losses on the battlefield.
