According to CBS News on June 9, the US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) deployed about 700 active duty Marines to Los Angeles to assist the National Guard in responding to violent protests in the city. They could arrive in the Los Angeles area as early as June 10 (local time), a defense official said.
“The Marines will join the National Guard to protect ‘federal personnel and property.’ They have been trained in de-escalation, crowd control and rules of the road for the use of force,” US Northern Command added.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also announced on June 9 that about 700 Marines "were deployed to Los Angeles to restore order."
Earlier, the White House said on June 7 that US President Donald Trump had ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, California, after violent protests against immigration raids took place there.
“If California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass cannot do their job, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem… the way it should be solved!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
On June 9, President Trump directed the Department of Defense to deploy 2,000 more National Guard troops to Los Angeles to support the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency amid ongoing protests there.
“At the President’s direction, the Department of Defense has mobilized an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to support ICE and allow federal law enforcement officers to safely carry out their duties,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said.
