The US Indo- Pacific Command has released photos of a US Army chemical warfare unit conducting joint exercises with South Korean forces near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), amid rising tensions along the border between North and South Korea.
In a statement on November 29, the Indo- Pacific Command said that US soldiers from the 59th Nuclear, Biological, Radiological, and Chemical Unit conducted exercises with US Forces Korea and the Republic of Korea military near the DMZ, the area separating South Korea and North Korea, to strengthen the combined defense posture.
According to the Indo-Pacific Command, the exercise focuses on reconnaissance and decontamination missions as well as countering weapons of mass destruction and biochemical and radiological hazards.
The announcement of the drills comes amid heightened tensions. North Korea recently redeployed troops and heavy weapons to the DMZ after scrapping a 2018 inter-Korean military agreement aimed at preventing tensions and clashes near the border.
