The people of My Phuoc commune always strive to build their homeland more and more prosperous.
The Land of Loyalty
During the resistance war against the US, My Phuoc was an important area, chosen as the base of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee. This land had suffered countless bombs and bullets. Mr. Le Trong Huu, former Secretary of the My Phuoc Commune Party Committee, recalled: "Back then, bombs and bullets rained down continuously, the people were poor, only growing one rice crop a year, 1 hectare only had 12 bushels... However, the people still wholeheartedly contributed rice to feed the army, ready to sacrifice to protect the revolution". The Party Committee and people of My Phuoc Commune were awarded the noble title: Heroic Unit of the People's Armed Forces. The Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee Base relic site was ranked as a National Historical Relic.
After the country was reunited, My Phuoc entered a new challenging journey. Hundreds of hectares of cajuput and water coconut forests were covered with toxic chemicals by the enemy, leaving the trees bare and withered; fields and gardens were plowed and became barren, the land was infertile, and production often failed due to alum and salinity. The transportation infrastructure was poor, with travel mainly by boat; makeshift schools...
Mr. Vo Dang Khoa, Standing Deputy Secretary, Chairman of the Inspection Committee of the My Phuoc Commune Party Committee, emphasized: “The Party and the State identify investment in infrastructure, education and health as key tasks to improve people's lives. Each completed project not only has the meaning of socio -economic development but also demonstrates the responsibility of gratitude to previous generations who sacrificed for the homeland”. Along with that, many policies to encourage agricultural development, land reclamation, restoration, irrigation construction... have been implemented. People have gradually approached and applied science and technology to fields, gardens...
Grow strong
Up to now, the main roads in My Phuoc commune have been asphalted, and concrete roads have now extended throughout the hamlets. In the new rural construction, in the past term, the locality mobilized over 813 billion VND to implement the program, of which nearly 150 billion VND came from socialized sources to build traffic infrastructure works, schools, and medical stations. Irrigation infrastructure has been invested synchronously, ensuring production and preventing and combating natural disasters. My Phuoc currently has 4/5 schools meeting national standards; universal education and health care for people have been maintained and implemented well.
In production, My Phuoc farmers promote mechanization, many households also use drones for sowing and spraying, contributing to improving productivity and production efficiency. In the period 2020-2025, the average rice growing area reached 12,041 hectares with an average yield of 6.6 tons/ha, output reaching 78,846 tons. Many households have converted to new models, bringing high economic value. A typical example is Mr. Le Vu Phuong in Phuoc An B hamlet, who boldly applied the model of raising wild ducks, with a flock of up to 650 ducks. Mr. Phuong shared: “Thanks to the support of the authorities and functional agencies, I have invested in an incubator and some other machinery and equipment. Currently, I supply ducklings to households in Can Tho City and neighboring provinces, 3,500-4,000 ducklings/month. After deducting expenses, I earn an average profit of 15-20 million VND/month”. The model has now been replicated to 25 households in the commune, opening up a new direction in economic development.
The average income per capita of My Phuoc has increased sharply, from 17 million VND in 2010 to 63 million VND/year currently. The poverty rate has decreased impressively. If in 2010, the whole commune had more than 1,000 poor households and nearly 600 near-poor households, now there are only 22 poor households, accounting for 0.38% and 120 near-poor households, accounting for 2.09%. During the last term, the commune created jobs for 1,552 people, reaching 207% of the resolution's target; vocational training for 1,335 people, reaching 101% of the resolution's target.
My Phuoc is one of 8 communes and wards of Can Tho city that remain the same, not merged after the arrangement of administrative units. In the first days of operating the apparatus according to the 2-level local government model, My Phuoc commune promptly stabilized the apparatus, immediately started performing tasks to operate smoothly, quickly serving people and businesses in handling administrative procedures.
My Phuoc has been growing strongly!
