According to Reuters and AFP, a US official familiar with the negotiations in Madrid said on September 15 that the US government is ready to let the ban on the social networking application TikTok take effect if it does not reach an agreement on the transfer from the Chinese company ByteDance.
The official said many technical aspects of the transfer had been resolved, but the Chinese side tied the deal to other demands related to US tariffs and technology restrictions.
Earlier in the day, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US and China were “close” to reaching a deal on TikTok as the two sides resumed trade talks in Madrid.
Mr. Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng opened a new round of discussions on September 14, aiming to narrow differences in the fields of trade and technology.
The meetings are expected to last until September 17 - also the deadline for TikTok to find new investors or face a ban in the US.
Speaking to reporters upon arriving at the Spanish Foreign Ministry for the second day of work, Mr. Bessent said: "Regarding the TikTok deal, we are very close to resolving the issue."
He stressed that if no agreement is reached, the overall relationship between the two countries “will not be affected” and “will remain very good at the highest level”./.
